7 Steps Towards Improving Nate Diaz Striking

(This is just my rant - please excuse all horrible errors.)

Nate Diaz striking was really frustrating to watch. If I was one of his trainers, I would tell him. . .

1. REACH ADVANTAGE  - USE IT CORRECTLY. You should be able to pepper your opponents with jabs. Consistently and constantly . . . LOOK AT YOUR BROTHER! Pitter-patter, punches in bunches.

2. ARE YOU THE TALLER FIGHTER?!? So why do I often see your head in the range of his opponents power? Examples of great tall strikers, see: Lennox Lewis and Wladimir Klitschko. Stop bending down so low, you're off balance and it limits your mobility.

3. LEG KICKS. PLEASE USE THEM! Kick the shin, the thigh, the liver, the ribs, and just to be a little bit predictable . . . the head. More front kicks, they were really effective against the short Maynard.

4. WILD HOOK SWINGS. Please stop. It is more than obvious that you do not have KO power or incredible speed. They are not effective, especially when you over commit each swing.

5. PROTECT YOURSELF AT ALL TIMES. Why oh why would you leave your chin unprotected? Keep your hands up high. YOU ARE NOT SPECIAL, you are not a great striker. Please conduct yourself like the amateur striker that you are. Stick to the basics. (I actually heard some one call Diaz an unorthodox striker . . . sigh.)

6. FIRE YOUR CURRENT BOXING COACH. While he may be a great coach, you're obviously not absorbing the lessons being taught. AND PLEASE do not believe the hype and seek out Freddie Roach. He's a good boxing coach but far from great. Not to mention, he has little to no understanding or respect for mixed martial arts.

7. GROW UP. We know you're badass, macho and tough as nails. We get it. Use your head in the ring. Fortunately you are very young and have room to improve. You just lost another fight that you should have been able to win. Let's be real Stevenson was better, stronger and faster than you. But these split decision losses could have easily been victories. HOLD YOUR HEAD UP. As a TUF winner, the UFC may keep you. See: Kendall Grove. If you are let go, there's always Japan, Strikeforce, MFC and a number of other shows ready to leverage UFC marketing dollars.

people forget, it took awhile before Nick really developed his now ’patented" pitter patter that batters guys into oblivion ala shamrock and smith. Nick had to get ousted from the UFC and polish his style before he became the legit wrecking machine he is now.

Gatti. Dekkers. Pele. Aoki. Kang. Vanderlei. Basillio. Harry Greb.

This is true

but you would think with that example to learn from…it wouldn’t take Nate quite as long to figure it out…what kills me is those long looping punches…with his length…if he just threw straight punches…it would make a world of difference.

To his credit he did extend the jab in the 3rd round a couple of times but with his length . . . damn. I think he should look at successful fighter with a similar body frame – Donald “Cowboy” Cerrone.

He has the potential to be a really good LW as opposed to the mediocre fighter that he’s becoming. FORGET JIU-JITSU.* We know you’re great at your pedigree but get a strength-coach, wrestling coach, judo, muay thai or something. Can you imagine what a trip to Thailand would do for his striking. (He might not be so lucky if he faces Kurt Pelligrino again.)

Is he participating in marathons and triathlons like his big brother???

  • His bjj skills will never leave him, it is impossible if he’s training with his brother, Shields, and Cesar Gracie.

June 2007 – Nate Diaz wins TUF 5
He then had 7 professional fights since then. He trained with BJ Penn, the current UFC LW champion and a number of elite fighters.

one thing that would help nate diaz is not to talk so much smack in the first round. i could see his lips moving for the entire round.

it would also help not to keep throwing your hands straight up in the air. i like his brother alot. he is from the same mold but can actually knock people out. his knockout or knockdown (it’s been awhile since i saw it)of robbie lawlor is one of my favorites. it kinda had a delayed reaction before the full effect came to pass.

i'm all about covering the spread and moneylines. i was building a house, i don't deserve this, deserves have nothing to do with it. bang. "unforgiven"

Pattern his boxing after his brothers?

His brothers horrible boxing? The boxing that got him thrashed by a much smaller man in KJ Noons? No. Just… No. Nick has done a much better job since moving up to 185 of actually sitting down on his punches and not just throwing pathetic punches that do nothing more than score points and deter no-one.

Nick’s old boxing would get his ass kicked by most anybody with any technical counter-striking ability in MMA and get him DESTROYED by any just-below-mediocre level and above boxer. Nate needs to learn to use his reach with his jab and get comfortable in actually using some textbook counterpunching and better footwork if he wants to improve his striking. Not that ugly slap-boxing shit he does and his brother used to do in the ring.

Gimme 1 round!
