Report: Takanori Gomi Signs With The UFC
From MMAFighting:
Takanori Gomi, once considered to be one of the best lightweight fighters in the world, has signed a multi-fight contract with the UFC. MMAFighting.com learned of the acquisition from sources on Friday.
No word on when and where Gomi will make his debut for the UFC. The organization has yet to officially announce the signing.
This is weird because I was just thinking to myself the other day would it be worth it for the UFC to sign Gomi. I'm sure he didn't sign for peanuts, and just how much does he have left in the tank? Well, the great thing about it is that the UFC can afford whoever they want and we'll get to find out if Gomi can cut it in the lightweight shark tank in the UFC! What say you?

Too bad...
…that ignorant people are going to see Gomi fail hard in the UFC (which he will) and use that to say he wasn’t great. He had the most insane stretch of brutal wins at 155 in the history of the sport, a mark that BJ is just beginning to challenge (and will eventually pass). The way Gomi crushed top competition in his prime was amazing. Unfortunately for Gomi, he never really trained that much or that hard, and once his athletic ability left him…so did his career. You can only get by on natural talent for so long.
i would give him one or two tuneup fights and then he should fight penn.
how old is gomi? if the person is right from above maybe he will train harder for a future fight with penn.
yes i am obsessive, obnoxious, in your face and all about covering the spread. those are my good qualities.

Gomi’s physically shot and he doesn’t care. He’s never cared, really. Gomi’s 30 and been fighting for almost 10 years, and has totally lost his drive. Gomi won’t win one or two tune-up fights: I imagine he’ll fight Edgar, lose, then fight someone else he couldn’t possibly lose to, then lose to someone like Florian or Sanchez after that.
Ya know
I have to agree with the aspect of you saying that he’s lost his drive…and once you lose your drive…it is VERY difficult to regain the top form you once had….whether it be injuries…or just burn out…or whatever….it’ll be interesting to see how they promote him that’s for sure..

Also, the UFC doesn’t give tune-up fights to people they pay real money to. He’ll fight Edgar, and they will hope Gomi can win so they can basically immediately give him a title shot because B.J. will need an opponent. I think this means they’ve realize they can’t possibly headline a show with B.J. and Gray Maynard, no matter what, and using an international star like Gomi only helps them in their foreign markets. Plus, they have all the footage in the world of Gomi crushing people from PRIDE and a redemption story for them to use. But it will be all for nought, because Gomi probably won’t win the fight. But it’s worth to have him just for the option, and Edgar would be a perfectly fine option for a title shot should he win. It’s a perfect fight for them to do.
IF
They did Gomi/Penn…if Gomi makes it that far…they’ll do it in Hawaii….that’s where the first fight took place…

And where is one of the four places Japanese people go on vacation?
Yeah. Hawaii. Plus they could actually find Akiyama a fight on that show too.

Man, I saw that fight just the other day.. not too often that you can see a b**ch-beating of such epic proportions, and at the time I don’t think that a top-fighter vs top-fighter bout happened too often.

Gomi is a monster and always has been. His only real weakness is his sub defense and even unmotivated he’d knock the shit out everyone but BJ in the standup department.
Some people are like Slinkies... not really good for anything, but you still can't
help but smile when you see one tumble down the stairs...
Well...depending on the match up
some of the wrestlers in the UFC could give him problems.

Once upon a time...
people thought that Gomi was the man. That boy was knocking fools around in Pride, and despite getting mauled by Penn, was widely considered one of, if not the best light-weight in the world. Then came Nick Diaz, who whomped him something fierce. Since then he’s lost fights he wasn’t supposed to, and (if memory serves) won a fight he shouldn’t have. I don’t think Gomi’s body is gone, but the guy just isn’t that hyped. If he can put it back together and start smoking dudes again, I’m all about it, because god knows the UFC needs more lightweight standouts. But in 2010? This signing is two years too late to mean anything.

I like this signing. At the end of the day, the UFC has signed a lightweight with international appeal that sports a 31-5 record. He also happens to be the last PRIDE lightwegiht champion and he’s a fairly exciting fighter. Some have said that he’s rededicated himself to training like never before. If nothing else this helps solidify the UFC’s claim to lightweight supremacy over the rosters of organizations such as DREAM.
someone mentioned spencer fisher as his 1rst fight, which i agree with if that’s the direction the ufc want’s to go with, and think that’s a very winnable fight for him. then he could take on a joe stevenson or clay guida. if (a big if) he get’s 2 wins under his belt, he’ll get a shot at bj imo. hopefully he moves to a big usa camp for good. i know he trained with aka for a while, but team jackson would be a good fit for him with guys like garcia and cerrone to train with. not sure that guida or stevenson is with that camp permanantly. aka or team couture would be good as well. i’m excited to FINALLY see him in the ufc. l hope it’s not too late. :)
How about a scrap with Huerta?

I like a matchup with Guida
Guida is pretty big name on the UFN card…they could let Guida headline against Gomi…and expose Gomi to a large number of fans…if he wins….viola.
