Boxing's Ricardo "El Matador" Mayorga Heading to MMA

Former 154 pound world boxing champion Ricardo "El Matador" Mayorga (29-7-1)

Professional boxing's former consensus 154 pound world champion Ricardo "El Matador" Mayorga (29-7-1) is allegedly switching to MMA. The announcement was made during the online telecast of the Shine Fights event last night. The Ohio based organization has not yet named a debut date for Mayorga. Mayorga has faced a literal who's who of boxing royalty throughout his career and became the world champion at 154 pounds by knocking out former champion Vernon Forrest. If this comes to fruition it will be an interesting addition to the regional promotion. I would argue that the 35-year-old Mayorga is the most accomplished professional boxer yet to cross over.

I’m excited that we’re begining to see the absolute elite of boxing crossing over.

Bloody hell.

Too old

The guy is 35 and being a LW/FW he would need a decent ground game to compete against anyone even worth his while to fight. What’s the point of having him smash Joe Schmo that nobody knows or a hand picked opponent to make him look good? Having a name boxer beat up on mma cans paints the sport in a negative light.

I expect he’ll definitely get some bums early on, like most guys do crossing over from wrestling, jiu-jitsu, kickboxing, etc… I don’t think that Ricardo will become world-class in MMA just because of the talent depth at 155 lbs. but he should make for some exciting fights against lightweights that are only skilled at the standup aspect.
