Roger Huerta Not Done With MMA

Promoted From Fanposts To Frontpage By Kelvin Hunt

According to a report by Sherdog.com, Roger Huerta isn't very happy about walking away from MMA with two back-to-back losses.

"I can’t go out with two losses in a row. I don’t think I’m going to call it quits anytime soon."

Perhaps Huerta's visions of finishing school, or acting, or whatever he's trying to leverage for better contract isn't quite panning out the way that he'd like.  I'm a fan of Huerta, but I questioned his reasons for holding out on renewing his contract with the UFC when all this talked ramped up.  Recently I've read (although unfortunately cannot source) that he's been seeking an absurd pay-rate, with options that rival top draws in the UFC, despite being a seemingly mediocre fighter.  Sure, Huerta is a pretty popular fighter, but demanding that kind of cash is a little outside of the means of a guy like him.

It seems that nowadays MMA fighters are trying their damnedest to get in to acting, which is a great move to maintain their longevity.  However, has anyone really been successful?  Cung Le has probably made it bigger than anyone else, and to be quite frank I have no interest in seeing his movies.  Gina Carano and Randy Couture have both made some moves into the movie world but have also been rather unsuccessful in landing roles that are of any real note.  The only fighter (that I can recollect on the spot) that has really gotten a role worth mentioning has been Rampage, but from what we've heard from Dana he's doing it for a pittance, on the promise of a better payday in the sequel...  the sequel which may never happen.

Although fighters need to look out for their long term interests, I think that they also need to remember what made them what they are: fighting.  Rampage is a popular character because of what he does in, and out of the ring.  Gina, while a pretty face, isn't known for much more than fighting.  When these fighters' ambitions for big movie roles fall flat, they'll have to go back to their bread and butter, which may not be there for them when they need it the most.  Although Cung Le seems to have enough B-films on the horizon to convince him to relinquish the Strikeforce Middleweight title, they're still not movies that the general populace has gone bonkers over.  If his movies fall flat, will he, and other fighters pursuing similar movie careers, go back to MMA?  If they do, will it be too little too late?

Good I really like Huerta. This is a highly ironic contrast to the Rampage situation.

Bloody hell.

Roger has a lot of talent and is still very young. Even if he took a year or two off to see where his movie career took him, he could still keep training and decide to come back at some point. Sure he’d have to fight through some ring rust but he’s good enough to do so. Would be a shame to never see him fight again.

Whatever said and done i wish him nothing but the very best.
