What I learned from UFC 103
- I learned that Hermes Franca doesn't have the discipline required to be a mixed martial artist! He has some dynamite in his hands, but his punching technique is atrocious - many, including me, have described his punches as "coming from weird angles" but enough with the excuses; the days of that wild loopy shit cutting it in MMA are numbered. Furthermore, have the hell do you miss weight by 4 lbs? Inexcusable, I wonder if Hermes too suffered from "girl problems" - I mean he came in looking like a little old lady and his outer appearance really reflected his effort and the skillset he displayed in this fight. We did learn that Tyson has some killer instinct in finishing the worst edition of a guy who's never been finished before, but where does that put him?
- I learned absolutely nothing about Josh Koscheck or Frank Trigg! Ok this fight confirmed my suspcions that Trigg is over-the-hill and further validated that Kosh has some power in his right hand but has Kosh learned anything from being tossed around by GSP, pummeled by Thiago Alves or getting KTFO by Paulo Thiago? I don't know. This fight should have absolutely NO EFFECT on the WW rankings and might very well serve to strengthen Josh's psychotic belief in his right hand, which isn't a good thing.
- I learned that foolish pride will kill you! Taking nothing away from Semtex, but I still believe Kampmann has the skillset to tool him but he has little to no chance in what's essentially a K1 fight. He stated that he wanted to prove that he could stand with Semtex and to his credit he did walk through some thunderous shots but eventually they took their toll and forced the ref to do the only right thing. A couple of half-hearted attempts to clinch was all he had to show for being "well-rounded" and that won't cut it. I'm still bummed out by this because now a pretty 1-dimensional fighter got to make his name off of one of my favorites and it's all his fault. Prove yourself by utilizing all the tools available to you and put your opponent away!
- I learned that Mirko is DONE! I've said it before and I'll say it again: time takes a harder toll on strikers as they lose their reflexes and speed. Mirko looked weary as hell and though he landed a couple of nice left hands, he didn't set anything up and he didn't have the answer for Dos Santos' knees, body shots and boxing in general as he was bullied around for the duration. If you're a Cro Cop fan this fight was disheartening as he was a shadow of his former self. What did we learn about Dos Santos? I don't really know, he looked crisp and utilized a diverse arsenal of strikes throughout the fight (including some really vicious body shots) but how I am to value this win is beyond me.
- I learned that Vitor is BACK! Unlike the insane flurry that robbed Matt Lindland of his consciousness, leading up to this knockout he looked calm, collected and crisp - Rich Franklin is a bit of a counter artist so being cautious was the right strategic approach to this fight. He made Franklin nervous, drew him in and unleashed a measured fury at just the right time. Franklin is a quality win for ANYONE and he disposed of him with ease. I'm pumped for a future showdown with Anderson Silva.

Vitor
isn’t back he never went anywhere. He’s always been a guy with fast hands and good power who could knock guys out who stand right in front of him and trade.
And a guy who struggles with fighters who have decent chins can take him down and beat on him.
He’s the same guy he’s always been.

Bloody hell.

Yea
But I don’t even know if I’ve ever seen Anderson Silva get rocked…much less knocked out….I mean it can happen….but I don’t think Belfort can do it…and as I said…Silva will have a distinct reach advantage.
