UFC 101 MMA4Real Staff Predictions

We are rolling at half staff today, so check out what Rich and I are predicting to go down this weekend at UFC 101.  It should be a great card, but was pretty difficult to predict with matchups that involve a lot of x-factors in my opinion.  Feel free to drop your thoughts and whatnot in the comments section.

BJ Penn Vs. Kenny Florian

Name: BJ Penn
Height: 5' 9" (175 cm)
Weight: 155 (70 kg)
Record: 13-5-1
BJ Penn
"The Prodigy"

Name: Kenny Florian
Height: 5' 10" (178 cm)
Weight: 155 (70 kg)
Record: 13-3-0
Kenny Florian
"KenFlo"

Rich Wyatt-Penn defeats Florian by submission in the 3rd. I expect Florian to acquit himself well in the first round and for Penn to really come on strong in the second. I'm thinking that Penn will do some good work with the jab and will finish Florian on the ground in the 3rd. After the fight, Penn will once again not be satisfied by fighting guys even close to his own size and will demand to face both Brock Lesnar and a grizzly bear later in the Fall.

Kelvin Hunt-I don't know what it is...I've just had this feeling since November that Florian is going to be BJ Penn.  Florian does have the tools to beat Penn.  I see Florian frustrating Penn with a lot of movement and winning a decision.

Anderson Silva Vs. Forrest Griffin

Name: Anderson Silva
Height: 6' 2" (188 cm)
Weight: 205 (93 kg)
Record: 24-4-0
Anderson Silva
"The Spider"

Name: Forrest Griffin
Height: 6' 3" (191 cm)
Weight: 205 (93 kg)
Record: 16-5-0
Forrest Griffin

Rich Wyatt-Silva defeats Griffin by TKO in the 2nd. I'm glad to see Zuffa challenging Silva. This is a big challenge considering that Forrest is a very large light heavyweight. I don't think that Griffin has mastered wrestling enough in his prep time for this fight to stifle Silva for too long. Silva ends Forrest's night in the 2nd.

Kelvin Hunt-Betting wise, I'd go with Griffin simply because I think with the right gameplan he could beat Anderson Silva...especially in a 3 rounder.  But I have to go with Anderson because of Griffin come forward style.  Silva via KO round 2.

Amir Sadollah Vs. Johny Hendricks

Name: Amir Sadollah
Height: 5' 11" (180 cm)
Weight: 170 (77 kg)
Record: 2-0-0
Amir Sadollah

Name: Johny Hendricks
Height: 5' 9" (175 cm)
Weight: 170 (77 kg)
Record: 5-0-0
Johny Hendricks

Rich Wyatt-Sadollah defeats Hendricks by decision. It's been awhile since we've seen Sadollah in action so ring rust is a very real concern. Somehow I see him weathering an early storm of offense on the ground by Hendricks and coming out with the 'W'. Sadollah gets a close decision.

Kelvin Hunt-I think the long layoff is going to hurt Sadollah, couple that with Hendricks beast of a amateur wrestling background...he's a much better wrestler than Dollaway...and I think he'll be putting Sadollah on his back early and often.  He'll need to, because he can't stand with Sadollah...I'm going with Hendricks via decision.

Kendall Grove Vs. Ricardo Almeida

Name: Kendall Grove
Height: 6' 6" (198 cm)
Weight: 185 (84 kg)
Record: 12-5-0
Kendall Grove
"Da Spyder"

Name: Ricardo Almeida
Height: 6' 0" (183 cm)
Weight: 185 (84 kg)
Record: 10-3-0
Ricardo Almeida
"Big Dog"

Rich Wyatt-Grove defeats Almeida by TKO in the 2nd. Kendall knows how much this fight means to his career. Expect the best Kendall Grove that we've seen. He'll need to be on his A game against a legit opponent like Almeida. Grove catches him with a big combo for the win in the second.

Kelvin Hunt-I was going to go with Kendall Grove via decision because he has more tools than Almeida, plus he's got a healthy reach advantage.  However, it's being reported that Grove is coming into this fight with a rib injury...so I might have to go with Almeida now via submission.

Josh Neer Vs. Kurt Pellegrino

Name: Josh Neer
Height: 5' 11" (180 cm)
Weight: 155 (70 kg)
Record: 25-7-1
Josh Neer
"The Dentist"

Name: Kurt Pellegrino
Height: 5' 8" (173 cm)
Weight: 155 (70 kg)
Record: 19-4-0
Kurt Pellegrino
"Batman"

Rich Wyatt-Pellegrino defeats Neer by decision.

Kelvin Hunt-I can't wait for this one...could be FOTN...I think Neer's size is going to be the difference in this one.   I'm go with Neer via decision in an absolute war.

Star-divide

Shane Nelson Vs. Aaron Riley

Name: Shane Nelson
Height: 5' 9" (175 cm)
Weight: 155 (70 kg)
Record: 13-3-0
Shane Nelson
"Sugar"

Name: Aaron Riley
Height: 5' 8" (173 cm)
Weight: 155 (70 kg)
Record: 27-11-1
Aaron Riley

Rich Wyatt-Nelson defeats Riley by TKO in the 3rd.

Kelvin Hunt-This will be payback for Shane Nelson as Riley got robbed at UFC 96 with a bad ref stoppage.  I'm go with Riley via TKO in Rd. 2

Tamdan McCrory Vs. John Howard

Name: Tamdan McCrory
Height: 6' 4" (193 cm)
Weight: 170 (77 kg)
Record: 12-2-0
Tamdan McCrory
"The Barn Cat"

Name: John Howard
Height: 5' 7" (170 cm)
Weight: 170 (77 kg)
Record: 11-4-0
John Howard
"Doomsday"

Rich Wyatt-McCrory defeats Howard by submission in the 2nd

Kelvin Hunt-This also have potential to be FOTN.  McCrory will have a huge reach advantage, but Howard has the edge in power.  Howard also has a submission background, so I don't see McCrory being able to sub him.  I'm go with Howard via decision.

Thales Leites Vs. Alessio Sakara

Name: Thales Leites
Height: 6' 1" (185 cm)
Weight: 185 (84 kg)
Record: 14-2-0
Thales Leites

Name: Alessio Sakara
Height: 6' 0" (183 cm)
Weight: 185 (84 kg)
Record: 17-7-0
Alessio Sakara
"Legionarius"

Rich Wyatt-Leites defeats Sakara by submission in the 2nd.

Kelvin Hunt-Leites via Submisson Rd. 1...Sakara's ground game is weaksauce

Matthew Riddle Vs. Dan Cramer

Name: Matthew Riddle
Height: 6' 1" (185 cm)
Weight: 170 (77 kg)
Record: 2-0-0
Matthew Riddle

Name: Dan Cramer
Height: 6' 2" (188 cm)
Weight: 170 (77 kg)
Record: 1-0-0
Dan Cramer

Rich Wyatt-Riddle defeats Cramer by decision

Kelvin Hunt-Riddle defeats Cramer by decision

George Sotiropoulos Vs. George Roop

Name: George Sotiropoulos
Height: 5' 10" (178 cm)
Weight: 155 (70 kg)
Record: 9-2-0
George Sotiropoulos

Name: George Roop
Height: 6' 1" (185 cm)
Weight: 155 (70 kg)
Record: 9-5-0
George Roop

Rich Wyatt-Sotitopoulous defeats Roop by submission in the 3rd

Kelvin Hunt-Sotitopoulous defeats Roop by decision

Jesse Lennox Vs. Danillo Villefort

Name: Jesse Lennox
Height: 5' 9" (175 cm)
Weight: 170 (77 kg)
Record: 14-1-0
Jesse Lennox
"The Ox"

Name: Danillo Villefort
Height: 6' 1" (185 cm)
Weight: 170 (77 kg)
Record: 9-2-0
Danillo Villefort
"Indio"

Rich Wyatt-Villefort defeats Lennox by TKO in the 2nd

Kelvin Hunt-Villefort defeats Lennox via Submission in Rd. 1

Florian via Decision, I don’t think Penn is focused on the task at hand and he seems more childish and irrational than ever.

Griffin via Decision, he looked super-cut and charged at the weigh-ins which kind of tipped the scales for me.

Sadollah via Submission Round 1, though it should be mentioned that I haven’t researched this match all that thoroughly (not that I could what with neither fighter having that many scraps to their name)

Almeida via Submission Round 2, though I’ve changed my mind about 10 times on this one; Kendall lacks a bit in the physical strength department so I wonder if he’ll be able to defend the takedown-attempts of Almeida who’s BJJ is much better even though Kendall’s frame create some interesting problems.

Neer via Submission Round 3, this will be a gritty ass fight though and if Kurt edges a decision I wouldn’t be surprised.

Bloody hell.

I just realized a common but reverse trend in Florian’s and Penn’s careers: Florian has learned from his losses, Penn has not learned from his losses.

Bloody hell.

haha

…I think Sadollah coming in light is going to hurt him against a powerful wrestler like Hendricks…and Grove’s rib injury could come into play about Almeida…

a) I think Sadollah actually doesn’t mind fighting off his back

b) I didn’t know about no rib injury… that definitely tips the scale in favor of Almeida IMO

Bloody hell.

yea

But like Nate Diaz…relying off submission off your back will do you in sooner or later…I just found out about the injury to Grove today…..he said it should be fine….but we saw how frank shamrock looked with bad ribs…
