Televise The Preliminary Bouts Please

With the UFC wanting to out draw boxing on September 19, the UFC has come up with a wonderful tactic to grab eyeballs on Spike tv. The tactic is to broadcast 2 Preliminary bouts before the event starts at 10p.m.EST. I like many other MMA fans were pleasantly surprised to find this out, more free live fights are always a good thing. Then I started pondering why does the UFC not do this for every event? What would the negatives be? I can't really think of any, Dana White is a smart guy he knows what people want to see and that is action and excitement. And anyway he get more action and excitement to the fans he is going to do it. I have a friend that goes to Arby's everyday to get a free sandwich, he doesn't go to any other fast food place because he can get Arby sandwiches for free. Same goes for some casual fan they might not buy every PPV but they will eat up the Prelims on Spike. The one main point I want to get across in this post is that MMA fans have the power, and it is every MMA fans responsibility to use his or her voice and speak up when you want something and speak up when you dislike something. Dana does not hold all the power you can make things change in the MMA landscape and by rasing your voice and tell the UFC you want more free fights! After the jump I will talk about all the positives for the UFC to air the Prelims on Spike.

Star-divide

  • If the UFC air the prelims for every PPV card you build stars far more easily, you can sell fighters to the public much easier and faster. Therefore the UFC will have more star power on their PPV's.
  • Advertisement Money. If 2 million people watched the UFC 100 replay I think it is safe to say that the minimum of viewers will be around 1 million. The UFC and Spike will love this and they will receive many more offers than they already do if airing the prelims becomes a recurring theme.
  • With 13 fights per card becoming the avagre amount of a UFC PPV the UFC is going to want display some of the fighters that get buried in the prelims. It would behoove the UFC to make this happen so fighters don't get lost in the shuffle.
  • When the UFC and Spike tv's contract ends the UFC will have more leverage at the bargaining table.
  • And something that is good for the fighters is they can earn more sponsorship money if they get on the Spike tv prelim broadcast. It is always a good thing when fighters earn more money.

I certainly would love to see all the Preliminary fights shown on Spike TV before a PPV…I’m inclined to think that it would certainly help PPV buys…because you have three types of fans in regards to PPV

-One is gonna buy the PPV regardless
-One picks and chooses which event they want to see but purchase about 3-4 events a year
-One that gathers a crowd to go in and help purchase the PPV

So if there are some exciting prelim fights right before the PPV comes on…you can’t tell me that wouldn’t help influence someone to go ahead and hit “order” on channel 601…lol.

The flipside is that Zuffa has the opportunity to make money via UFC On Demand/UFC Vault as well as their DVD’s….so they have to weigh how much money they would make off of those two streamsof income, compared to how much they would make PPV wise if they aired the prelims…so it’s not exactly cut and dry nahmean..

Good stuff though.

Yeah, it would increase DVD buys, and UFC ondemand as you said. people want to watch good fight and fights that happen on the Prelims are good fights, so show it to us Zuffa.

They could probably charge their sponsors more for the extra exposure too.

Bloody hell.
