Erin Toughill: "Too Big To Fight"
Erin Toughill is someone you might have heard of she is an MMA veteran that fight in the women's 145 pound division. Along side Gina Carano Toughill was on the t.v. series "American Gladiator." Toughill is signed with the promotion Strike force and in an interview she did with 5oz of Pain Toughill is already calling out her competition.Toughill starts in on Marloes Coenen first, talking about the level of competition she has faced.
"It’s not top level. Roxy Modaferri is a top 135 pound fighter, but she’s way smaller than Marloes. Coenon lost to a pro debuter recently, and some other non competitive opponents. Look, I’m not saying I fought "top three" competition recently, but one was undefeated, and another was a vet who fought lots of top competition. Lots of girls turn down fights with me. Even though I now fight 145, I still get all these people saying I’m "too big to fight" them. Such a joke. If I weigh 145, then I’m in the weight class. I’m tired of the girls that are running their mouths, but won’t fight me."
Then she begins to tear Cyborg apart.
"Cyborg still looks technically poor, but just kept chugging along. Her wrestling and ground game looked very vulnerable. She claims that she does not get nervous, but it was very obvious that she does. When she entered the ring, she did a lot of things that showed she was frightened. I think I’m too big, too experienced, too technical, and I hit too hard for her. She’ll rush in on me, and that will be the biggest mistake she’s ever made."
Toughill talks about Strikforce marketing her and when she will get her title shot.
"Marketing-wise, the casual fan should get to know me first. Maybe that’s the plan with Strikeforce, we’ll see. Due to contract issues, I was not able to attend the event. Marloes took my place at the last minute. It all worked out the way it was supposed to."
FiveOuncesOfPain: "It doesn’t really seem like anyone has been marketed properly to face off with Cyborg next. Would you rather get a tune-up fight before challenging for the title, or would you rather the masses get to know you in your first fight with Cyborg?"
Erin Toughill: "Honestly, I don’t really care. From a marketing perspective it clearly makes more sense to get me on TV once or twice before the title fight, but in MY perspective, I wanna fight right now!"
[UPDATE #1] Due to my complete lack of reshearch our own Kelvin Hunt covered this earlier this week in a much better post here.
More quotes and my opinion on the matter after the jump.
Toughill talks about the significances of Cyborg vs Carano.
"I feel like Gina didn’t show what she was capable of. She did some great things, but messed up a lot due to nerves and breaking mentally. If she capitalized, she would have won. Not every fight can be amazing, I understand, and sometimes the nerves can mess you up. I’ve been there so I know. But from what I read, people were not happy with the fight. A lot of people said it looked like two rookies fighting. I don’t know. I just know I’ll fight whomever they put in front of me, and if its Cyborg, I’ll beat her."
This is my opinion on the matter Strikeforce needs to let Coenen fight for the title next. You have Cyborg the mean, not so pretty fighter, who just beat the face of women's MMA. Against the attractive, flashy submission fighter, and you must do this fight quickly. For the fans to stay interested you must keep these women figures in the public eye, that way Strikeforce looses no momentum in there last women's fight. That could be the co-main event for Strikforce in October, along with Fedor or Jake Sheild's on the card, that is a great card! Another thing Strikeforce should do, put Toughill on T.V. I cannot stress this enough. She can talk up a fight very well. She can play the heel or she can play the good girl. Her charisma is unbelievable. Toughill is also very easy on the eye's, and that does not hurt her marketability one bit. I'm very serious when I say she could be the face of women's MMA very very soon.

A lot of what they got out of that interview….Toughill wrote on the UG in which I posted last week sometime…no doubt about it…Toughill is a threat to any woman she faces…I would think they could get her on the next televised event….then have Cyborg come in the cage after the fight if he won…and boom…you have a fight to market…some would call that WWEish…I call it using very little to get a lot…especially when you are Strikeforce and don’t have the marketing budget that the UFC does…
Thanks for posting btw.
