UFC 101 Review: Kenny Florian Reflects On UFC 101 Loss To BJ Penn

UFC Lightweight Kenny Florian

The Boston Herald:

"My goal wasn’t to go out there and say, ‘Hey, look Kenny Florian went longer than anybody else did with B.J. Penn at 155 (pounds) and he was in the best shape of his life,’ " Florian said. "It’s a disappointment and it’s a failure because I didn’t win the fight. The way I’m feeling right now, it’s a tough pill to swallow."

"The goal was to keep it close the whole time," Florian said. "I definitely thought I won the first round (and) I thought I won the third. I know one judge had me winning all three rounds and I think another judge had me winning 2-1. The goal was to try to get him to the fifth round and drown him. I couldn’t afford to make mistakes at that point."

"I really believed that it was going to come down to the wrestling and whoever got on top of who was going to win the fight," Florian said. "I think that was the key for both of us, and B.J. was able to do it. I made the first big mistake and I knew whoever made the first big mistake was probably going to lose the fight and that’s what happened. At the highest levels you can’t afford those kinds of mistakes."

I actually thought he won every round, even the won in which he was mercilessly choked to near unconsciousness. :) I kid, I kid.

Judges also . . .

PROVE that BJ Penn did not dominate (control) Florian through out the fight. People love to use that word but it in no way was that fight completely one-sided.

BJ dominated in terms of damage done. Kenny may have won round 2 or 3 based upon “Octagon Control” but at no point did he do an ounce of damage to BJ. He was basically LNPing, hoping BJ would tire.

Yea, those judges were smoking crack too.

No way he had 2 rounds. The numbers dont lie. Neither does the way Kenny’s face looked on the way to the locker room.

Also

he offered no proof in the quotes above that the judges had him ahead, just like he didn’t offer up any proof that Huerta greased or oiled up.

Yo

So you saying he got his Keith Jardine on huh…when he said that judge would have giving him the fight if he hadn’t gotten dropped by Rampage at the end of the 3rd round…lol

If the judges are allowed to tell the fighters they had them ahead or how they had the fight scored for that matter, then why wouldn’t he, or anyone else making similar claims, say which judges had them ahead?

Sorry Ken-Ken you got dropped in that 1st round and you only have a bunch of failed takedown attempts to account for the rest of your performance. I had it 3-0 Penn going into the 4th.

Bloody hell.

Judges...

Wow! I HOPE that isn’t how the judges really saw that fight. If ‘octagon control’ means failing to get a takedown and holding against the cage, I suppose Diego knows what he needs to go practice. Then again, Rogan was all on Ken-flo’s nuts during the fight for how effective his strategy was…." BJ might have overtrained, and Kenny is wearing him out"

thank God the fight was finished
