Nick Diaz vs. Joe Riggs for the Strikeforce Welterweight Title!

Strikeforce welterweight Nick Diaz (20-7)

Well, the August 15th Strikeforce show on Showtime just got a little more awesome. MMAWeekly.com is reporting that Nick Diaz (20-7) will face Joe "Diesel" Riggs (30-10) for the organization's welterweight championship. This will be a rematch of the February 2006 UFC fight which Riggs won by decision. The announced card thus far looks like this (championship fights noted by asterisk):

Gina Carano (7-0) vs. Cristiane "Cyborg" Santos (7-1)

*Josh "The Punk" Thomson (16-2) vs. Gilbert Melendez (15-2)

*Nick Diaz (21-7) vs. Joe "Diesel" Riggs (30-10)

*Allistair Overeem (29-11) vs. Fabricio Werdum (11-4-1)

This would be another strong Showtime event for Scott Coker's Strikeforce promotion. With multiple major televised MMA events in August by UFC, Affliction, WEC and Strikeforce, MMA fans will have plenty to keep their attention next month.

First paragraph you wrote Nate Diaz.

But yeah this fight is gonna be cool. Probably the same thing from Diaz, though. He’ll box a guy who will box back except less effectively. Probably round 3 tko or submission by Diaz.

Also I’d like to cite my NC State education. It helped prepare me for a lifetime of using proper spelling and grammar as well. Go Wulfpak!!!

Diaz all day…Riggs will wilt under the pressure Diaz applies IMO…unless he’s able to get the take down.

I don’t think Riggs has the GnP or the offensive grappling ability required to pass Diaz’s guard. If he takes Nick down he’s in more immediate danger than he is striking with him. Riggs best bet is to not gas out early, and just wait for Diaz to fall into a strong punch combination. Diaz can easily go 5 rounds so Riggs has to end it by like round 3.

Diaz no doubt.

I take it Sheilds is either going to stay at 185, catch weight, or go to the UFC. I hope it’s to the UFC. But in that rawvegas.tv interview he said he had a big fight being finalized for the August 15th card. Guess we’ll have to see.

He’s going to stay at 185 for now..I think he’s bouncing to the UFC as soon as this contract is up though…because even at 185 there are not many people for him to fight in Strikeforce.

I know WWE has “Night of Champions” coming up, where every title is defended… is Strikeforce going for the same thing?

WWE, uh, what?

Have does Carano/Cyborg still headline this card? lol

Bloody hell.

lol

Interesting questions…I’m assuming because it’s for the first women’s title…Overeem and Werdum aren’t big names to casual fans…Nick Diaz may have some pull…Melendez and Thomson don’t…so that’s why more than likely….Carano has more pull than all of them.

What a summer for MMA. This is another stacked card.

Cyborg
Punk (though I’m pulling for El Nino)
Nick
Alistair (never cared for him but after laying out Badr Hari….)

Just hope they don’t stretch their roster.

Bloody hell.

Yea

I was thinking the same thing…I mean after this…I don’t think they can have a show for a like another 3-4 months or so…or they could be stacking this show in hopes of impressing the folk at CBS or something?
