Affliction "Trilogy" Preview: Vitor Belfort vs. Jorge Santiago & Paul Buentello vs. Gilbert Yvel

I'm really excited for this Belfort/Santiago fight, as both fighters have been on a roll lately.  Actually, this could be one of the biggest middleweight fights than can happen outside of the UFC.  If Belfort can win this one, he'll creep into top ten status.  If Santiago wins then he'll solidify himself as one of the best middleweights outside the UFC.

Paul Buentello vs. Gilbert Yvel after the jump.

Who yall got in this one?

I hope Buentello wins, but either way I think that it is a great bout—it plays to the strengths of both fighters and could provide a big boost in stature and momentum for the winner. (All the more important if Affliction does indeed keel over before they get another match.)

It ends in an armbar or a strangle regardless.

Buentello should win

Where would he go from there though? He’s already lost to Overeem in Strikeforce…I dunno if Dana would have him back in the UFC….wouldn’t hurt though as the guy come to take your head off…

I'm not sure where he goes

A big win certainly would help things. I’d like to see him in the UFC again as he wasn’t exactly run out of the UFC due to a ton of losses (or boring fights either), but I don’t know if Strikeforce would be completely done with him. He’s a serviceable HW, with a ton of experience. I could see him fighting Werdum or Rogers, or just about any other HW that Strikeforce can get their hands on—not that he’d win every fight, but he’s legitimate in a often questionable division. He’s a solid gatekeeper at the time being, and if he strings enough wins together, it wouldn’t be out of the question to rematch Overeem, assuming that’s how the Strikeforce title picture still comes together some time in the future.

Alternatively, if Yvel wins big, I get the feeling he has a larger chance at landing a UFC spot, what with never having fought there before and having a definitive “look.”

It ends in an armbar or a strangle regardless.

Hmm

I can agree with that.
