Don't Believe The Hype: What Fighter Is Most Overrated?
When you survey the MMA landscape you're likely to see a fighter or two that you would label as being overrated. Maybe their arrival was accompanied with a lot of excessive hype. Perhaps they're a fighter that has had multiple opportunities on the big stage and left you unimpressed. Maybe you even see them as having glaring holes in their game that could be a huge liability. Keep in mind that labeling a fighter as overrated is not the same thing as labeling someone a bad fighter. It could simply mean that, while you acknowledge that the fighter is skilled, you don't think that the hype is proportional to what they've shown thus far. Which fighter(s) would you label as overrated and why? I've got a couple of contenders in mind but I'd be interested to see what you all think.

Tito Ortiz
It’s true that he helped keep the UFC afloat during the dark days…I’ll give him that. However, it’s funny how he harps on how he defended his belt 5 times, and he’s one of the best champs ever…..BOOOOOOOOO.
The fact of the matter is…2 of those defenses were against natural 185’ers…and another was against a broke down Ken Shamrock…who he later padded record with even further. The other two wins were a boring decision win over Matyushenko and Elvis Sinosic…who was 4-3 at the time.
Every time he has fought the best of the best….little Frank Shamrock stopped him…he got destroyed twice against Liddell…Couture owned him…Machida owned him…Rashad would have had he not grabbed the fence and/or Rashad’s shorts multiple times…The only ‘name’ he has beaten is Vitor Belfort…and even then some people think Belfort won that fight…
Hell..he barely beat Forrest Griffin when Griffin was greener than a leprechaun….and that decision is debatable…

Very good points. I think that, at the end of the day, Tito didn’t have enough dimensions to his game for that world-class level anymore.

But who’s overating him other than himself? Ortiz is not overrated at all dude. lol
I’m gonna say BJ Penn for a shit load of reasons too.

Penn overrated as a lightweight fighter or a fighter in general?
by SlickRick00 on Jul 2, 2009 11:41 AM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
In general. He’s a good lightweight right now, not a great one yet. If he cleans out the division like Anderson has and GSP is close to doing so then I would say he desrves all the praise he keeps getting. Right now, for me, he’s big time overrated.

So if he cleans out Florian and Sanchez you’ll buy in?

I would

Those and Maynard, Edgar and Huerta if he comes back. BJ has some work to do, son! Remember, he wanted to win the title against GSP and retire. Dude it irks the crap outta me of how high BJ thinks of himself. He needs to prove it IMO.
Having said all of that I am a BJ fan, but only when he is at LW.

I feel ya. I’m of the opinion that no lightweight in the world will beat him for the next year or so (which should end his prime fighting years, in my opinion), just as none have beaten him in a LONG time. We’ll find out next month, though. That’s why they have the fights.

I have him beating Florian in a good war. Dude, BJ is looking slim as hell already. He’s not playing around at all. This is good! :)

Nah
There are A LOT of Tito fans out there…that swear he’s one of the best ever….lol…
I agree that BJ Penn could be listed as overrated…his legacy is skewed in that he’s bounced around from weight division to weight division entirely too much…had he stayed at LW the entire time…things could be different.

Exactly, Penn took some hits against the world’s best because he challenged himself at higher (in some cases MUCH higher) weight classes). When I think of BJ Penn’s legacy I mostly focus on how he stacked up with other 155 pound fighters in his prime. From that perspective the picture becomes very clear.

I dunno man that time has come and gone. When he had the belt yeah his fans thought he was the best in the world. Maybe even some time after as well. He still has tons of fans but I doubt they think he is teh best evah! lol

Sorry, that last reply was about Tito for Kelvin.

Let’s point out those last three defenses were close to a year apart. Most of it, if I’m correct, had to do with him avoiding Chuck

People might not like this one…but…Dan Henderson, I know he’s tough as nails…but skill wise I think he’s somewhat overrated

Haha he’s one too, Bisping is gonna take him out.

Amir Sadollah.
Wait…does he count as a fighter if he never fights.

Michael Bisping, Denis Kang, and Nate Diaz to start. They’ve all got talents, sure, but it seems like when people bring them up, they’re ready to write off sliced bread. Forrest Griffin is another one; Charles walker mentioned that Hendo is tough as nails, and I think that’s the case here too.

Yea
I have to agree….however, in Bisping’s defense…he has beaten everyone they have put in front of him…except Rashad….and in hindsight that’s fight makes him look semi-good…if he beats Henderson though…it’s a different story…Kang…yea, hell I don’t even know if people hype him anymore….and Diaz…just…SMMFH…

Yeah…any lingering semblance of Kang’s hype ended with the Belcher fight.

I’m guessing you missed his fight with Matt Hamill.. you know, the one where Hamill got shafted in the worst possible way?

The Count…..Michael Bisping is my choice as well. And honestly, I tried rooting for the guy. After coming off of TUF, he was one of my favorite fighters, but I was thoroughly unimpressed once he hit the UFC roster full time. Only recently have I began to gain a measure of that enthusiasm back.
