Around SBN: Explaining Jeremy Lin's Early, Surprising Success

UFC 100 (Wrestlefest 2k9)

Odds and Ends from the most hyped UFC event in history.....

Star-divide

GSP outwrestles anyone that is a danger to him. Jon Fitch, Koscheck, whatever. Alves. His only convincing stoppages have been Hughes, Serra, and BJ Penn (the last two are 155'ers as I've posted before and we all know this is true). Silva will blast GSP into a coma and he knows it (watch the post-fight interview.....GSP knows in his canuck heart how that fight will go.

As for post-fight antics: this is men fighting in a cage. This isn't dodgeball and it ain't ping pong either. Yeah, some fighters talk trash. Some fighters we love to hate. They are called "heels". Google it. The sport would be bland without people to hate. As much as I dislike Lesnar, let him be a polarizing figure. It's the only reason half of us know Ortiz's name. Ken Shamrock remained visible LONG after he should have been b/c he could sell a fight, ala Phil Baroni. Nick Diaz, people love him for his antics. I don't think Brock is any different. Does he get my hate? Sure. Do I deep down kinda like him for giving me an mma fighter to hate? Hell yes.

No No No!

I think the way he beat Fitch and Alves is even more impressive than finishing them to a degree. We have to remember also that those two guys are were the #2 welterweights in the world when he dismantled them…its’ not like they are some chumps…

GSP can and will beat Anderson Silva…mark my words.

Maybe if the fight was at 175 GSP would have a chance. The fight will never happen, but even if it did I think Anderson is still on another level than GSP. His performance against Alves was as-expected, although he did fail to take Thiago down several times and caught several power shots. Silva has a more versatile striking package than Alves does (nevermind the size difference) and has much better hands.

I’m not understanding. Are we to take it as a negative that GSP “outwrestles anyone that is a danger to him”? Isn’t that the point? In a self defense situation, which combat sports loosely simulate, aren’t you supposed to do what it takes to put yourself in a superior position to win the fight? If so, why are we to take it as a negative that GSP outwrestles opposition when necessary, why?

Ya know

I was just about to write what you wrote almost verbatim.

Alves didn’t threaten in the stand-up because of that severe reach disadvantage… without having rewatched the event or seen numbers for it I think GSP landed more meaningful strikes in the stand up too

Bloody hell.

Oh without a doubt

Depends on what you mean by meaningful...

I felt like Thiago was landing the cleaner, harder punches but GSP would not only land a punch but also as a setup for a takedown.

He knocked Alves on his ass though…

Bloody hell.

Thiago was off-balance; he didn’t get knocked unconscious at any point.

5 rounds of on top and punches, same as fitch. it’s the same as what people decried about matt hughes after awhile, i guess it bothers me more b/c he’s only beaten/defended his belt against 2 guys who are legitimately in his weight class, and people think he should fight a guy that can put guys to sleep in both 185 and the 205 weight class…Silva will batter GSP.

Gatti. Dekkers. Pele. Aoki. Kang. Vanderlei.

I don’t necessarily think he should fight Anderson. I don’t think anyone under 170 is likely to beat him anytime soon, though (and it’s one of the deeper weight classes in the sport).

Nah

GSP does madd damage to his opponents…I mean look at Fitch and Alves’s faces afterwards….then look at Paulo Thiago’s face/body after the Fitch fight.

Word, GSP is a mauler… he may lack that one fight-ending superpunch, but he will batter you on the ground.

Bloody hell.
