Final Thoughts...
I don’t think I’m gonna participate in this live thread stuff, because y’all are just too crazy! Here are a few thoughts from the preview we did though…
Lawler vs. Shields: It’s a classic matchup of striker versus grappler. Jake Shields is in a class of his own in submission grappling, but his hands are pretty bad. In his fight with Paul Daley, he got pretty tired too. Robby Lawler though, is a heavy, heavy hitter, and with a strong wrestling base (training originally with MFS, and now the HIT Squad) he should be able to fend off Shields long enough to get a TKO, if not a decision. I think that if this were at 170 (and Lawler were a 170lb fighter) things would be different, but the fact is that Jake Shields is just out of his weight class on this one.
Arlovski vs. Rogers: Brett Rogers is a big up and comer, while Arlovski has been around the game for many a year, not to mention is a former UFC Heavyweight champion. Arlovski’s chin has been suspect, but his speed should be enough to stay away from Rogers’ powerful combinations. Arlovski by 2nd round TKO
Smith vs. Diaz: Diaz has some good BJJ, or so we’ve heard, but he hasn’t used it much, if at all, in years. Scott Smith loves to come chin-forward, which might be a problem against the long-reaching and accurate Nick Diaz. Of course, Smith also has some power in those hands, and could put the hurt on Diaz in the if and when he connects. Even though Diaz is the favorite here, I like smith to come away with the UD, if he doesn’t manage to TKO (either by stoppage or cuts) Diaz late in the second. Diaz has all the tools he needs to win, but I really don’t think that he’ll actually go to the ground.
Baroni vs. Riggs: Joe Riggs at 170 is a scary sight, not unlike seeing champion figure skaters. At the same time, Phil Baroni hasn’t really looked that hot in recent years. But wait, neither has Riggs! I think that these guys make some great fights, but they’re not exactly grade-A competition. Look for Baroni to gas, and Riggs to look scary thin. Also look for an early KO from either; neither have that great of chins, and they’ve both got some big power. I think Baroni will be more powerful, but I’m guessing Riggs connects first, and KO’s Baroni in the first round.
Whitehead vs. Randleman: Kevin Randleman has had some tough luck in the past few years, not the least of which was a WILD staph infection that took a few pounds of flesh (literally) out of his shoulder. Randleman has some strong wrestling, not to mention big power, but I think that Whitehead is the better all around fighter. Provided that he doesn’t get smothered into oblivion by Randleman’s monsterish wrestling, I like Whitehead to pull off a submission in the second, although I wouldn’t be surprised to see this go to a decision.

haha…. man I should have gone with my gut and put some money on Rogers. Arlovski will get killed in pro boxing with his non existent chin.
Rogers has a new fan in me.

I’m happy Lawler lost. Big win for Shields.
Decent matches but I think the WEC will be far more entertaining.
