Mid-Year Awards: 10 Best MMA Submissions Of 2009

A while back we talked about if MMA was heading more to ultimate kickboxing and leaving the ground game to die off or something.  After doing a little homework, we found out that the ground game and submissions in general haven't really fallen off at all.  In fact, we've seen some pretty dope submission in the first half of 2009.  Let's check out MMA4Real's 10 Best MMA Submissions of 2009 in no particular order:

  • Toby Imada vs. Jorge Masvidal, Bellator 5 via Inverted Triangle Choke
  • Demian Maia vs. Chael Sonnen, UFC 95 via Triangle Choke
  • Joe Lauzon vs. Jeremy Stephens, UFC 17 via Armbar
  • Jake Shields vs. Robbie Lawler, Strikeforce: Lawler vs. Shields via Guillotine Choke
  • Seth Dikun vs. Rolando Perez, WEC 41 via Flying Triangle Choke
  • Brock Larson vs. Mike Pyle, UFC 98 via Arm Triangle Choke
  • Cole Miller vs. Junie Browning, UFN 18 via Guillotine Choke
  • Krzysztof Soszynski vs. Brian Stann, UFC 97 via Kimura
  • Terry Etim vs. Justin Buchholz, UFC 99 via D'Arce Choke
  • Jason Dent vs. Cameron Dollar, UFC 19 via Anaconda Choke

.Gif's of some of these are after the jump. Feel free to give your thoughts and post your own favorites.

Toby Imada

that inverted triangle was SIIICK!!!!!!!! I couldn’t believe it when I saw it. When Masvidal dropped to the mat, asleep, I lost my marbles!

Put me down for the Toby Imada submission. He gets points for creativity. All of the ones that you listed were good.

Word

That jawn was sick…my personal fav. is the Maia one though…simply because I dislike Sonnen….a lot.

Yeah the Maia one is my favourite. The Imada one is awesome but fairly opportunistic, whereas Maia’s seemed like a done deal from the moment Maia threw Sonnen.

I’m one of those people who enjoy a fundamentally sound RNC over some crazy flying armbar or such.

Bloody hell.

Yea

I can appreciate a good RNC for sure.

Imada, for sure.

Honorable mention…Jake Shields…because he was “supposed to” get KTFO by the mighty Lawler.
