MMA4Real's June Lightweight Rankings

Lightweight

1. BJ Penn

2. Eddie Alvarez

3. Tatsuya Kawajiri

4. Kenny Florian

5. Sean Sherk

6. Shinya Aoki

7. Gray Maynard

8. Frankie Edgar

9. Gesias Cavalcante

10. Diego Sanchez

-#1 BJ Penn will take on #4 ranked Kenny Florian at UFC 101 for the UFC lightweight title.  #2 Eddie Alvarez just won the inaugural Bellator Fighting Championships tournament, and doesn't have anything else scheduled for now.  #3 Tatsuya Kawajiri is coming off a big win against #9 Gesias Cavalcante, and will fight in a K-1 match later this year.  #5 Sean Sherk is coming off a loss to #8 Frankie Edgar and doesn't have anything scheduled as of yet.  #6 Shinya Aoki is coming off a loss to Mach Sakurai(at a catchweight) and will fight Vitor "Shaolin" Riberio at DREAM 10.  #7 Gray Maynard doesn't have a fight scheduled, but I would love to see him face #10 Diego Sanchez in a #1 contenders match to the winner of Florian/Penn.  #10 Diego Sanchez moves into the top ten as a LW after battering the always tough Clay Guida at the TUF 9 Finale.  Just like in the other weight divisions, there are tons of matchups on the horizon and the rankings could shake up something serious in the next couple of months.

Aoki shouldn’t have been dropped for losing to Sakurai at welterweight. That fight had no bearing in his weight class whatsoever.

It's not really that

I just don’t think he’s that good…take those pants off(no homo) and he gets destroyed IMO.

Sherk simply shouldn’t be above Edgar here — it wasn’t a flash KO or anything, it was a 3 round domination.

Bloody hell.

But see, I don’t think a fighter automatically jumps in front of the guy he beats in the rankings all the time…plus he lost to Gray Maynard :)

It’s pretty difficult to rank these guys because one could beat the other on any given night…

Neither do I — this is one of those cases though. Sherk should probably be behind both.

Bloody hell.

Ehh

I dunno…depends on how he looks in his next fight for me…if he’d get back to his roots he could beat Edgar IMO…but he wants to be a kickboxer for some reason.

Yup and I’m accounting for which Sean Sherk is most likely to show up to a fight… I mean dude insisted on boxing BJ.

Bloody hell.
