2 Shades of Brown: Velasquez and Kongo Aftermath

Brown Power? In due time, perhaps....

Star-divide

The fight went about how I expected....Kongo nearly ended the fight with his pole arms and stiff punches....then Cain took him down and battered him for 3 long rounds. Despite the highlight reel KO by Cain awhile back, he's got some growing to do. His standup isn't terrible, but it leaves something to be desired in a division which despite what they detractors say, is still a dangerous division in the UFC. Big dudes, little gloves.....I remember reading that something like 75% of heavyweight UFC fights don't leave the first round. I'm not saying Cain has a glass chin, but it does worry me. Guys like Gonzaga and Carwin and Lesnar hit like a freight train when they connect.....I'm all for a new body in the mix, but he's going to need some fairly selective scheduling to get him in line with a title shot intact.

Yeah they need to build him carefully, let him get some experience instead of going with the Lesnar-model… also co-main eventing a PPV is leagues and bounds from co-main eventing a Fight Night card.

Bloody hell.

One thing that struck me about Cain’s fight with Kongo: If you go back and watch it, even AFTER he gets rocked hard by Kongo, Cain is still the one moving forward when they’re both on their feet. Seriously, I mean, either the guy is crazy or has balls of steel. Most guys would be moving laterally or backward against a big, strong striker like that, especially after having been shaken up by them. Velasquez kept coming forward. He was coming in throwing shots like he just wasn’t afraid at all. Maybe he very well should have been, but he wasn’t. That, I thought, was interesting.

I feel you

The reason he was moving forward was to get close enough to get the takedown so he could gather himself IMO.

Lesnar might hit hard when he connects but his standup is at the same level as Cain’s. Carwin’s is a little bit better and Gonzaga is several notches above. Dos Santos has KO power and I’m sure his ground game isn’t as weak as Kongo’s. Would be interesting to see if Cain can handle someone like that.

Yea

Dos Santos could be a darkhorse….he has a gimmie in his next fight against McCully though IMO.

McCully’s done okay in some fights, but I don’t know that he’s a top tier guy…and Dos Santos is dangerous as hell.

Gatti. Dekkers. Pele. Aoki. Kang. Vanderlei.

Nah

McCully isn’t a top tier guy by any means…lol.
