Interesting night of fights. The Franklin fight was a good fight not sure I scored it the same. Cain showed that he is learning fast....

Cain mos def has to work on his striking defense if he’s to go against Carwin — can’t take one to get inside with that man-beast!

Bloody hell.

Carwin-Velasquez would be perfect for a # 1 contender fight.

At the same time I kind of want them to give Velasquez room to develop.

Bloody hell.

Yeah, I know what you mean. He still has a lot to work on. I think he would benefit from more fight experience.

I just read an excellent article on this topic centered around Saunders and Velasquez on Sherdog called “Sacrificing the Young”

Bloody hell.

Saw it. Yeah, prospect development is crucial. I still think Cain hasn’t scratched the surface. I would love to see him face Carwin, though.

It would be a barnburner for sure.

Bloody hell.

Hmm…I guess I’m in the minority in that I think Velasquez has developed more skills at this point than Carwin?

I think he’s a more accomplished wrestler than Carwin but he’s 20 lbs lighter, also yesterday’s fight put doubts in my head concerning his striking skills and Shane has insane power in his hands.

Bloody hell.

Shane has insane power…but techinically he’s not as good as Cain in the striking department…not to mention the only bright spot for him against Gonzaga was the big right that put Gonzaga down. Up to that point, Gonzaga was pretty much doing as he pleased.

Gonzaga is really underrated though, going into the fight I said Gonzaga would destroy Carwin… but that’s how it goes with those little gloves. I could easily see Gonzaga defeating Frank Mir, Minotauro and other top HWs. Either way I was impressed with Carwin overcoming that intial adversity and snuffing such a quality opponent.

What I do think would be Velasquez key to victory over Carwin is his stamina and cardio, wearing the big guy down.

Bloody hell.

I agree re Gonzaga being underrated, I think if he fought against Cain at UFC 99 he probably would have won. He has great power in his striking and he would have been dangerous on the ground as well.

Oh, I give Carwin props for surviving and winning against a credible opponent as well. I just saw all types of holes in his game that night though.

It kind of goes back to one of my pet peeves: Wrestler-turned-strikers who forget what their MMA base is.

Bloody hell.

Word

I also hate it when wrestlers don’t develop a striking game…ala Matt Hughes…and when strikers don’t develop their ground games ala Cro Cop and Cheick Kongo.
