UFC 99 Recap/Quick Results: Rich Franklin Edges Wanderlei Silva
Another successful UFC has come and past. I'd have to say this event was pretty good, we got some answers to some questions. Then again, this event caused even more questions to be pondered. What's up with Cro Cop going to DREAM? I told yall Kongo would be a tougher fight for Velasquez than Herring :). That fight just how I thought it would for the most part. Anyways, let's get on to the fights and quick thoughts about each one:
Marcus Davis vs. Dan Hardy-I thought this was a pretty good fight. I thought Davis trying to take the fight to the ground early was smart, as I actually picked him to win via submission. He had a armbar in the second round but couldn't finish it. I think it was a close fight, but I think the judges also got it right with the decision. Hardy did way more damage throughout the fight IMO. Dan Hardy gambled and won in calling out Marcus Davis and winning. I'd love to see him against Mike Swick next. I didn't appreciate Marcus Davis being a sore loser. Hardy was all class afterwards in the post-fight interview...big win for Hardy.
Caol Uno vs. Spencer Fisher-When this fight was first announced, I was like hell yea. However, the longer I thought about it...the more I knew this fight would go to a decision. Both fighters are incredibly difficult to finish and well rouned. Who knew that German fans knew how to Boo so well? Well...good to see the fellow North Carolinian get the win over such a crafty veteran in Uno. Dana and Joe Silva....bring Uno back please.
Mike Swick vs. Ben Saunders-First of all. Mike Swick isn't ready for GSP and I don't know if he'll ever be ready for him. Why did Ben Saunders basically run across the cage....and pull guard to start the fight? First round was pretty lackluster. The second round wasn't much better until the finish. Swick talks about fighting better fighters, but unless he's the type of fighter to rise up to the level of competition he's facing....he could be in for a long night against anyone top 5.
Mirko Cro Cop vs. Moustapha Al-Turk-Come on...this was a gimmie fight for Cro Cop to win. Al-Turk was setting the pace of the fight and actually landing shots on Cro Cop. Mirko did seem to have a little more explosiveness in his hands, but that's about it...not to mention the eye poke. I still think the end was near for Al-Turk...anyways.. Too bad he's a man that doesn't keep his word according to various reports after UFC 99 about him signing with DREAM. This fight didn't prove anything on his behalf...but I told yall that already.
Cain Velasquez vs. Cheick Kongo-Well....this fight went just how I thought it would...except Velasquez wasn't able to finish Kongo. I knew Velasquez would have a hard time if he tried to stand with Kongo...and it showed each time he tried to do so. However, when he stayed with the gameplan I suggested he pretty much had his way with Kongo. We learned that Velasquez needs to work on his standup, and that Kongo has madd heart. For those annointing Velasquez as the next big thing....hold your horses....he's got a ways to go.
Wanderlei Silva vs. Rich Franklin-Well...no dancing to Sandstorm :( it's a loss that Wanderlei Silva can live with I suppose. After all, he is supposed to be moving to the MW division. If he had gotten KO'ed...then I guess everyone would be asking him to retire. The fight went how I though it would with Franklin using his reach advantage to pick Silva apart. Wandy landed a couple of bombs...but that was it and he was visibly tired as the shots and weight cut took it's toll IMO. However, it was a great fight and Wanderlei trying to swarm during the last minute of the last round was GREAT. Well..I'd like to see Rich Franklin matched up against Luis Cane next since he's staying at LHW. I guess Silva will make the track down to MW...he should fight a top contender there IMO...the winner of Marquardt/Maia or Okami. There's no sense in giving him a fluff fight at 185 at this point in his career. BTW, the crowd was great during this fight.

I hate the way I had to watch this event…I just couldn’t enjoy it the way I wanted too…it was a close fight for sure…I’m have to go back and watch it on tomorrow…Wandy was going for broke in the last round though…I LOVE that in a fighter….I have no idea why more guys don’t do that when they know the fight is close….and/or it’s clear they are losing a decision.

it’s not a pity “29-28” — I thought he tagged Franklin enough through the rounds to earn than, even considering the 10-must system and the fact that I have a 104 degrees fever running.
Bloody hell.
DAYUM
@ having a 104 degree fever and drinking gin/lemon on top of that….LOL

I still can’t believe the ref didn’t spot the Crocop eye poke. It was hardly an impressive win for Mirko and I was left massively disappointed after the fight. Good night of action overall, especially enjoyed the Hardy/Davies fight, sad to see Davies’s bad-sportsmanship at the end though. Velasquez’s power over Kongo was impressive but he def needs to work on his stand up, I’d still like to see him fight HH as another test. Good night for the British fighters as well – Terry Etim as the potential to do very well in the LW division.
Awful night of fights IMO
The Davis/Hardy fight was decent, as was the Wanderlei/Silva fight. Other than that, straight garbage. I am convinced more than ever now that Velasquez is over-hyped and will get demolished should he face Carwin, Lesnar, Couture or Mir.
I'm the kind of girl who loves to watch a GOOD fight!

Hmm
I dunno….as long as he sticks with his GnP…he’ll be ok as long as he works on his striking in the meantime…none of the guys you mentioned are as good of a striker as Kongo…nor do they have the reach he has.

Word the 3-4 feet between you anc Cheick Kongo might the most dangerous distance to close in MMA. Vealsquez ability to recoup and get back on it, as well as his cardio are out of this world.
Bloody hell.
True
Because son was rocked…yet was able to get a advantageous position rather quickly afterwards each time.

i couldn't disagree more
He has no standup game, and was unable to finish a turtling Kongo in 15 mins. If he got rocked by Kongo once and recovered I’d be a little more inclined to agree, but it happend 4 times! Sure, he recovered, but I’m not sure allowing yourself to get smashed in the face is a smart gameplan. I agree that Kongo is the best striker in the heavyweight division, but just because he’s better than the guys I mentioned, doesn’t mean that they aren’t good strikers, and more to the point, they are BETTER strikers than Cain by a HUGE margin. Yes, I believe Lesnar is a MUCH better striker than Cain and would be able to use his superior strength and size to dominate him.
Point being, I wasn’t impressed last night at all by EITHER of their performances. UFC 100 better blow my mind… to the point of orgasm dammit. Last night’s PPV is definitely on my top 10 list of horrible UFC’s.

That’s the key though: Kongo turtled up, he blasted him with shots and knees to the body and improved his position (Kongo looked like he had been mauled by a kodiak after the fight) — the fight was pretty similiar to Lesnar/Herring, the only difference is the big shot went the other way in this fight.
Bloody hell.
^ It was remniscent of Lesnar vs. Herring. Kongo rocked Velasquez a few times but anytime it happend Cain just slammed him to the floor and dominated position while peppering him with constant strikes. Kongo was very fortunate. Most people have to pay a lot of money to get a wrestling lesson from a national champion. He got one last night and was paid to receive it. Yeah, I said it.
That was the biggest question answered here: Kongo’s wrestling is NOT up to par with the elite of the HW division, sure he catches you you’re in trouble, but I think we would see the same fight if he went against Lesnar, Couture or Carwin (with certain variations of course, but still pretty similiar).
Bloody hell.
i thought the hardy/davis fight was razor thin……1st round definitively Davis, 2nd round debatable b/c Hardy did wobble him/flash knock him down, but it’s MMA, not knockout/boxing, and the 3rd round….again debatable. Hardy had a nice looking elbow from in his guard…but does that trump the heel hook, takedown, and work of Davis? I dunno……i could see being upset with losing that decision…..overseas…..
Gatti. Dekkers. Pele. Aoki. Kang. Vanderlei.
