Could a normal man with a couple years training beat a pro boxer in a street fight?

A coworker and I were watching Pacquiao fight and we started talking about if a boxer near that level (Mayweather in particular) fought an MMA guy. That lead to 'what if Mayweather were at a bar and started a fight with ME'. A coworker said 'turn and run'. I'm not the turn and run kind of guy. I never, ever turn my back on a known enemy, of course. Anyway, I said 'If I have no chance to get out of fighting him I will fight since I would have basically no choice'. I told him that I would recognize if someone were a boxer, wrestler (by their stance) or just some redneck who has no idea what he is doing.

Anyway, I said that if I had no choice but to fight someone like Mayweather that I would try and take them down before they knocked me out and once down I would try ground and pound or some of the basic BJJ moves I know. I have 2 years American Freestyle Karate and now like 4 months Krav Maga. I also have some wrestling in my background.  In other words, I'm not a complete putz. Anyway, he insisted that, even if I got him on the ground that I would have no chance. I explained that I have only seen one person get a knock out from his back and that it is highly unlikely. I told him that I didn't think I would win, but did believe that I could, under those circumstances. Anyway, my question is this:

If a person with some experience had to fight a world class boxer, what do you think would happen? What would be the chances of getting a boxer down? Once on the ground, if the other guy has a year or so of training in MMA, would he stand a chance against someone of the caliber of boxer like Mayweather?

I’m not inclined to think that an average guy would be able to do that after only a couple years of training. However, somebody who’s fairly athletic with maybe a little bit of a base in grappling and a good chin would have a decent shot after a couple years of training.

I’m a pretty aggressive fighter, and it comes naturally to me. I hit hard and can take a punch. I still want to stress that I didn’t say that the odds were good for me, just that I would have a chance. The biggest issue for me would be being in shape. I am in good enough shape for an hour of Krav Maga (which kicks my ass!), so I’m quite sure I wouldn’t gas in the first minute, even though I’m 39.. Plus in a real fight I not only use knees and elbows but also fingers to the eyes and any other ‘cheating’ way of fighting.

I do agree with you, Rick. I think I would have a chance if things went right once I got him down (if, that is). Just not a good one. =>

I look at it like this…in a street fight anything is possible. I’m keep it real…in a street fight I’m fighting to win…so that means I’m kicking in the nuts…I’m gouging eyes…I’m picking up shit to hit you with…lol. So couple all that with being athletic and some training? I’d say I would have a chance…especially if the dude is like 170 or something…lol

Nice first fanpost mightyhokie…

Haha…for real. I saw a kid get DESTROYED at this playground I used to play b-ball at…he was trying to fight all fair and shit…I learned that ‘fair’ in the streets will get you killed or badly hurt. Needless to say….he lost…lol

Yeah, after a guy picked a fight with me once and I confronted him he kept trying to back out. Finally I said ‘You don’t want to fight me?‘. ’No,’ he said. I turned around to leave and he jumped me. I fell face first on the asphalt while he punched me a couple of times as I fell. I got up but he took off running and I had blood flowing down my face Ric Flair style! haha

Anyway, I caught up with him two weeks later at the car wash and broke a couple of his ribs for him and his nose. After he was laying there crying I just lost all my steam. Lucky for him because he was helpless.

I learned to never, ever turn my back on anyone. I’m from the Bas Rutten school of thought…“I don’t believe in an eye for an eye, I believe in two eyes for an eye!” haha

HAHA!
Small town…he didn’t have a lot of places to hide and he knew what was coming.

As for Enter the Dragon, I might prefer the version in “Kentucky Fried Movie” called ’A Fist Full of Yen"! =>

A more cramped, crowded venue wouldn’t necessarily favor the layman, but an open one would mos def favor the pro.

Bloody hell.

yup. anything goes in a streetfight. i’d go for the nuts against a bigger stronger dude. when i was a junior in high scholl(a loooong time ago) my old ancient history teacher told me a story once about his time in the service (ww2) when he knew he was going to get into a fight over a girl with a dude who was a boxer. my teacher had no fighting experience and admitted that he was scared shitless, until his dad told him"just tackle and hold him down, he cant box you on the ground". he did just this and didn’t get hurt at all. now this other guy wasn’t a talented as mayweather, but my teach had zero fighting experience. not the greatest story ever, but it made total sense. long story short, a good wrestler can beat a good boxer anyday in a streetfight. jmo.
