"Mauricio “Shogun” Rua has in principle accepted a bout with new light heavyweight champion Lyoto Machida, MMAWeekly.com has learned from sources close to negotiations.
Though a concrete date for the fight could not be confirmed, and Machida’s management could not be reached at the time of this writing, sources say it would likely take place in October or November."

Well, since Rampage chose to fight Rashad…and Griffin is fighting Anderson Silva…Shogun would be the next fighter in line in the #5 spot. So I can’t disagree with the UFC doing this. I’m a bit disappointed that Rampage choose to coach TUF again…but on the flipside it should be entertaining…and I definitely want to see him fight Rashad…so all in all it all worked out I suppose.

I can’t help but think that Rampage is ducking Machida for now. He also said he wants time to improve as a fighter. I think he realizes he is no match for Machida now.

I think it was because they were wanting Machida to fight by October. Quinton is healing up a bit right now and wanted to fight a little later than that. Since he’s been wanting to fight Rashad anyway, the fight will be a little later which will give him time to be 100%, and add in the fact that he and Rashad will probably make for more compelling television and the decision makes a little more sense.

and probably the biggest factor…MONEY…I doubt Rampage would do TUF again unless he’s getting paid!!!!

Oh man, we totally talked about this at the tail end of the show!
There seem to be some folks that think that Shogun has a shot at beating Machida, but I tend to disagree. My money is on Machida, and it will stay there for a loooong time!

I tend to agree but then if we’ve all learned anything about this sport is that it is pretty unpredictable.

yeah, people forget how Shogun was getting picked apart by Nakamura and Diabate…nothing against them, but I’d say Machida’s a wee bit better than them standing

I would have loved to have seen the expected Rampage matchup with Machida. In thinking positive though, it is wonderful to have so many diverse, and great fighters under one organization. Allowing us as fans to still get great matchups despite not getting the expected matchup.
