Should Matt Hughes Retire After His Performance At UFC 98?
Of course all of the rumors are swirling now after Stephan Bonnar stated that Matt Hughes will retire after his fight with Matt Serra at UFC 98. This fight will mark the 50th fight of his career(yes, you read that right), and he'll be 36 years old later this year. He's lost 3 out of his last 4 fights, granted all of those losses were to the #1 and #2 ranked welterweights in the world in Georges St. Pierre and Thiago Alves. He has stated that he doesn't want to keep fighting if he's to become a stepping stone for younger fighters. He'll probably never be welterweight champion again, but he could fight the likes of Jon Fitch, Josh Koscheck, Mike Swick, Dustin Hazelett, Anthony Johnson, and so on. So there are plenty of fights left for him if he were to keep fighting. So I ask you, should Matt Hughes retire after this fight with Matt Serra at UFC 98?

So after that performance against Matt Serra, should Matt Hughes call it quits? I mean he didn't exactly win that fight convincingly in my opinion. In fact, I thought Serra did enough to win a close decision.

There was a time I wanted to see him fight Kos, but I think Kos takes that fight now.

I don’t think he has what it takes to compete with the new era of UFC welterweights. Of the guys you listed, I’d picked all of them except Swick to beat Hughes. He’s just not athletic enough or well-rounded enough (especially on the feet) to compete anymore. It’s sad, but he’s a lot like Tito in my mind — the game has passed him by. It’s not like he’s been bull-headed about it, it just happened. It’s unfortunate that it’s happened so quickly, but you’re going to start seeing this from the old time guys now.

He’s still one of the best WW in the world… but still, there’s not much point to continuing when you’ve been knocked down a notch and the only way to go is down – especially when you’ve been one of the best.
Bloody hell.

I think even the likes of Anthony Johnson, Ben Saunders, Brock Larson and couple of other guys would take Hughes out at this point in his career. And of course the guys you mentioned would all run through Hughes as well.
So to answer your question, Yes he should keep fighting and get WHOOPED ;)

LOL…I think he should have rode off into the sunset after he beat GSP when they first fought. He was already passed his prime then, I thought. he’s held on way longer than I ever thought he would or should. I’m frankly surprised to still see him competing, but to each their own. I’m a fan but wish he would’ve retired years ago. But we live in a world where Evander Holyfield still boxes, so by all means Matt keep going till you’re 90.

He could fight at smaller venues Dan Severn-style, but a prolonged career in the UFC? Nah.
Bloody hell.

LOL…I’d forgot about that, 3PA. I remember several years back thinking that Dan had retired long ago and then I saw that he had beaten Travis Fulton or someone in a show held out in the middle of nowhere. I like seeing guys going out as close to their peak years as possible, but I realize that it’s thier careers and it’s a decision that they ultimately have to live with.

As a die hard Hughes fan, I don’t see any reason for him to keep fighting. He’s the most dominant welterweight of all time, but the game has clearly passed him by and is much different than when he was dominating. Out of all those possibly fights listed, what purpose would any of them serve otehr than to make him a stepping stone? And if he did win, he then has to fight the same guys who knocked him out three times. I think you can ultimately look at it this way- 2 years ago, or maybe even less, Mattt Hughes would have absolutly destroyed Matt Serra.

There is nothing left for anyone to say… you got this perfect.
No one should want to see Matt Hughes: Welterweight Gatekeeper…

I thought Serra won that fight as well. I think Hughes should retire, but I wouldn’t mind seeing Kos give a him a beat down.

I’d like to see Hughes fight Karo Parisyan and then retire.
