Injuries continue: Heath Herring out of UFC 99 (Updated)

According to the UFC's Twitter page:

Heath Herring is out of UFC 99 in Germany due to injury. His replacement will be named tomorrow on UFC.COM.

Herring was due to face top heavyweight prospect Cain Velasquez in the co-main event of the evening.

Edited by Charles Walker

UFC.com just announced the replacement will be none other than...Cheick Kongo

When Heath Herring was forced to withdraw from his UFC 99 bout against Cain Velasquez, the search immediately went out for a replacement. Well, the UFC didn’t have to look very far, as highly-regarded contender Cheick Kongo has stepped up to face the unbeaten Velasquez on the main card of the June 13th bout in Cologne, Germany.

Kongo is currently riding a three fight winning streak that includes TKOs of Dan Evensen, Mostapha Al-Turk, and Antoni Hardonk. In Velasquez (5-0), he faces one of the division’s brightest young stars in what promises to be one of the most exciting fights on the stacked UFC 99 card, which is headlined by the bout between Rich Franklin and Wanderlei Silva.

Star-divide

Wow, I think this will still be a good fight, although I think Herring would be a little tougher for Cain, I think Cain can take Kongo down and do damage, but it'll be interesting to see if Kongo's takedown defense is really up to par for this one.  Glad they got a solid replacement.

Oh man… ’twas such a perfect fight for Velasquez too.

Bloody hell.

I wonder who they’ll have him face now? Hmm….Cro Cop? Al Turk is still listed as fighting Todd Duffee…..hmmm.

Cro Cop would be an excellent alternative… but I don’t think Cro Cop would be too enthusiastic over facing Cain.

Bloody hell.

Why not…shit he would be better off facing him now while he’s still pretty inexperienced!

I’ve actually heard a rumor that it’s Kongo. We’ll see, I suppose. I’ll believe it when I see it announced by the UFC.

Cain needs a stern test from somebody.

Herring was going to be solid, but we all remember how much Lesnar dominated him last time out. CroCop could be dangerous if his striking is back to where it used to be and a fight with Kongo would be a solid eliminator fight…

Time will tell.

Cain is my pick for the future of the division so I definitely think he takes this. I will say that he’s in with a pretty bad man, though. Should be fun to watch.

There goes Kongo’s title shot…

Bloody hell.

I agree.

Kong is good, but I think Velasquez ground and pounds him in this one.

me too. this fight with kongo might be easier than one with herrring for cain imo, but is a little more high profile and could advance cain quicker than a herring win would have. kongo is a bigger name and is thought of more highly than herring( even though herring has a disputed win over chiek) by most fans. good job ufc. no let down here.

Maybe it’s just me…but I swear Kongo is a tougher test than Herring is…Herring can’t stop a takedown for shit either…however, Kongo has much better standup…not to mention the fact that he’s improved his takedown defense a great deal over the past 3 years…don’t sleep on Kongo in this one…

He’s slow to get off in the stand-up. Granted his wrestling is much improved, it was what made the difference against Hardonk, but his takedown defense still remains untested in my view.

I wouldn’t be surprised if Velasquez takes this one via strikes in the clinch.

Bloody hell.

I dunno man…Kongo is huge and will have a significant reach advantage as well….I’m more interested in this one….I think Velasquez was gonna steamroll Herring

It’s not often that a fight card improves through injury. Nothing against Herring, but Kongo vs Velasquez is a true contenders match-up.
