Fight Night Essentials

So if you're like me...April 18th seems like ages ago and we're all getting ansy for some good MMA.  Sure there has been other shows like Bellator, but there's just something about a UFC fight night, especially a pay-per-view with a solid line up.  Now that we're in the countdown before UFC 98:  Evans vs. Machida, it's time to get together your fight night essentials.

So what are your 'fight night' essentials?

What do you have to have whenever you're watching a UFC PPV to make it complete?  For me, I need some chicken wings...it's not a must, but what's better than watching guys beat the crap out of each other while dipping a golden brown wing into some ranch sauce?  Also, Corona's my choice of beer.  Lime optional.

If possible, I have to watch the Countdown show to get me pumped up for the fight (especially if it's one of those PPVs that hasn't really sold me yet as far as excitement).

And you know what's odd, I HAVE to see the intro that they play before every PPV.  If I miss it I feel like I've missed an important part of the show, lol...happened to  me for 95 and I was pissed.  Something about it hypes me up even further for the show.

So guys, what are some of your essentials for a fight night?

MIller Lite is my choice of beer. I’m not claiming its the best or anything but its my fav over all others. Bud Lime is a far away second.

Flour Tortilla Chicken Taquitos with cheese dip, always a must!

Nachos, Wings or Pizza. We tend to rotate on every Boxing/MMA event.

Same, I MUST see the Countdown show right before the PPV even though I’ve seen it earlier in the week. Again with the Gladiator intro. I hate it…yet I must have it! It’s weird. Last but not least it must be in HD. Its just an extra $10.00 so why not right? I will never go back to watching my Fight PPVs in SD.

Beer of any variety that’s not watery and tasteless, preferably dark (been drinking alot of Sam Adams Dark Lager lately). Fast food of some sort – since I know people at Mickey D’s after working there myself I can get food for free, usually a bag of QPs and apple pies (that I microwave come fight time). Mind you I seldom watch with friends due to the godforsaken hour the events are broadcasted here otherwise there’d be potato chips, mixed nuts, warm up playing some xbox 360 and drunken arm wrestling.

So yeah, basically: a beer or two, some fast food.

Bloody hell.

Oh yeah, I forgot: I need a pack of smokes in case one of the fighters I cheer for lose or if my bets go awry (I don’t smoke otherwise).

iv’e usually already eaten by the time the event starts, so it’s usually just snacks. rotel and tortillia chips is 1 of my favs. or just plain chips and salsa. sometimes beef jerky, i’m a big beef jerky nut. i like these kind of conversations about different fans. i generally watch the fights alone and prefer it that way. most of my friends that like sports are not much into mma. my old lady ask way too many dumb questions.i seen some fans that say they never watch it alone. it would be nice to have 4 or 5 friends who were as passionate about the sport as me, come over and watch (hell, i wouldn’t even charge them). i couldn’t imagine watching in a crowded bar with a bunch drunks who are probably casual fans at best. i did that once along time ago with a boxing ppv and it was bad. really all i need are some bad-ass fights! :)

Discussing events in real time on here has become a pretty fun little tradition.

I normally make wings with Texas Pete and use bleu cheese instead of ranch. Maybe get a REAL pepperoni pizza.
When I lived in Louisville a couple years back, I had more friends up there that were MMA fans, so the parties were nuts. There would be like 5 or 6 different types of beer ranging from Falls City (cheap local beer) to Guiness, bunch of liquor from Old Crow Whiskey to Dewers, and pizza, wings and a bunch of of other various bad for you food items. Plus everyone pitched in 5 or 10 bucks to help cover costs. And everything in Louisville closes at 4am so we’d take cabs out to the bars after the PPV.

I just started brewing beer...

and I’m unveling my stout next Saturday for UFC 98. We’ll probably throw down some dogs on the grill and maybe do some steaks with it. Now that DST hit we can grill while it’s still light. Damnit I love summer.

On what scale are you brewing? I mean, is it just for private consumption or do you sell to pubs/bars/stores?

Bloody hell.

by 3PA on May 17, 2009 1:18 AM EDT up reply actions

Private right now...

but we are developing 3 recepies and gathering supplies to start a craft brewery (we’re hoping to produce 100 gallons weekly within the next 12 months). We have locked down a good Amber recepie and I hope this stout comes out as good as I hope it will. Our ultimate goal is a brew pub, where we can just have our beers on tap with some good food.

grammar is cool...

I’m hoping this stout comes out like I think it will.

Word man, I’m a bit of beer aficionado and I’m thinking about starting a micro brewery with some friends.

You definately should...

funding for a full fledged quality craft/micro brewery costs around $50,000. But if you don’t mind going ghetto you can get setup to make 50 gallon batches for around $3500. It’s really all about the beer with us and we take care when we brew so we don’t need all the flash of the fancy breweries.

I’m from Seattle which is the mecca of brewing in the US. I live about a mile from the Redhook HQ and Mac & Jack’s (one of the best Porters I’ve ever had, and their Amber is everywhere up here) is just down the road. Plus we have Pyramid, Henry Weinards, Bridgeport, Rogue (my favorite brewery as a whole), Widmer Brothers and about a million more. A brew tour trip from Portland to Seattle is a must for beer fans.

The stout that we’re producing is a Chai Mocha Stout. This batch clocks in at 9.9% ABV with 27IBU’s and an OG of 1.081. Think of it as Guinness with more Coffee notes (all natural from Barley and not from coffee beans themselves) and a spicy finish, courtesy of a small steep of Chai at the end of the brew.

Sorry for the ramble, I get way geeked talking with fellow beer nerds. What are some of your favorites?

by B Money on May 20, 2009 2:03 PM EDT up reply actions

Oh boy, that list would be a long one lol… I basically have 3 favorite TYPES of beer:

I like the roasty malty chocolate/coffee type flavours with tar, smoke, liquorice and similiar undertones – Imperial stouts and the like. I like EXTREME hoppiness, so IPAs are a given. Also a big fan of Belgian trappist ales.

Me and my pops recently shelled out 40 bucks for the privelege of enjoying our own bottles of the second highest rated beer on ratebeer.com (Närke Kaggen Stormaktsporter, brewed right here in Sweden). Overall we don’t have that many micro breweries but the ones we have are quality. Of course there are local guerilla-styled ones where people brew in their basement and that’s what we’re looking at, though I’ll primarily just be an investor with a couple of other guys handling brewing, marketing and all that.

Bloody hell.

It's a killer hobby...

if you get it going I’ll get you my info and we can try a beer swap. I’m swamped with my real job currently, but once we kick into full gear I’ll probably leave and go full time as Co-Brewmaster. Good luck and if you ever feel like talking beer I’m always down.

B Money…don’t forget about the fantasy league this week!

by Kelvin Hunt on May 19, 2009 8:48 PM EDT reply actions

No doubt!

I’m in it to win it…I just forget for the mid-week WEC events…and the Strikeforce event (i figured it would be skipped).

Three things...

…hookers, blow, and firetrucks!

Just kidding.

I’ve usually eaten by then because the excitement takes away any appetite I have. I also never have people over, except maybe like one friend. I know this sounds anti-social, but when I’m watching a PPV or my Hokies I hate to have people asking stupid questions or talking about something not related. I like to hear the commentary and it is hard to get lost in the fight when someone is asking me why i chose the colors I did for my walls!
