Dream 9 - Super Hulk Tournament
via MMAWeekly
In a surprise move on Thursday, Dream event producer Keiichi Sasahara announced the addition of an open-weight tournament to the promotion's Dream 9 event on May 26. The announcement was made at a press conference in Tokyo.
Perhaps even more surprising is one of the tournament participants. Former professional Major League Baseball player Jose Canseco is a part of the tournament. He will face Hong Man Choi in the opening round of the "Super Hulk Tournament - World Superman Championship," as it is being dubbed by Dream.
Also in the opening round of the open weight brackets are bouts pitting Ikuhisa Minowa against Bob Sapp, Rameau Thierry Sokoudjou facing Jan Nortje, and Gegard Mousasi fighting Mark Hunt.
NightmareOfBattle.com reports that, unlike most Dream tournaments, the semi-finals and finals of the Super Hulk Tournament will not take place on the same night. And while the rules for the tournament are not yet set, it is expected that the fights will be shorter than the usual 10-minute first round and 5-minute second round, and that no knee strikes will be allowed to the head of a downed opponent.
Man....what in the world...Minowa & Sapp...Canseco & Choi....Sokoudjou & Nortje....Hunt & Mousasi....
at least it's on HDNet, so for everyone that has it...you can witness it live....wow is all I got to say, but it'll be fun to watch along with the rest of that card, which has a great Main Event with 'JZ' Calvacante & Kawajiri in a lightweight bout

I don’t know about LIVE…I’d guess it’ll show on delay b/c of the Tuesday date.
I think this is a really solid card. FWGP, JZ/Kawajiri, Mayhem/Jacare and this random OW Tourney. It makes for some Japanese fun.

It’ll be live…
Simon, a guest on today’s edition of MMAjunkie.com Radio (www.mmajunkie.com/radio), broke the news that DREAM.9 will air live on HDNet.

Some of the fights are awesome (Kawajiri/JZ, Miller/Jacare, a few of the featherweight fights), but I’ll be honest and say that I’m not a fan of the spectacle that is this “Hulk” tournament. I know plenty of fellow MMA fans that love it man, but I just don’t “get” this whole thing about wanting to see multiple freak show fights on a card. To each their own, I suppose. Me, I’ll be watching Yammamoto, Kawajiri and some of the other guys and fast forward through most of these freak show fights.
the circus, freakshow type of events are not my cup of tea either and i can understand why some like it, but alot of those same people who are praising it are the same fans who bash brock for being a FORMER wwe wrestler and bag on tuf for being a joke.

I mean why is little ass Minowa fighting Bob Sapp? That’s just stupid IMO.

Why is Bob Sapp fighting is another question to be asked. :P What are his goals? Is he serious or hes just in it for da luv of money?

Same reason John Daly gets all kinds of love on the PGA tour, but hasn’t won a damn thing in years. Never underestimate how much people are intrigued by the outlandish.
Those pants he wore were funny as hell!

They shoulda put Nortje vs Choi and Soku vs Conseco that way Soku actually has a shot at winning…kinda-maybe. :)

Jesus, what a freakshow… I think out of the bunch, the only fighters I want to see are Mousasi and Hunt. And Hunt hasn’t looked so hot lately.

These are fun fights. Some fans (particularly the Japanese) want to see these fighters go at it. Plus these are guys with skills (well most of them)…not just an amputee testing himself.

"They wanted me to sign for six fights," Mousasi said of the original deal. "I didn't want that. They didn't pay me that much. But money will come. I want to grow with Strikeforce as they grow with Showtime and CBS. I think it's a good place to be.
"If I had it in my mind, like OK, I'm going to the UFC, then I would have gone. But I have a new contract with DREAM, so I'm planning to stay busy and fight in Strikeforce and Japan constantly."
"I don't want to fight for too long," he said. "(At) 30, I'm finished. In my mind, (I just want) the amount of money that [would give me] a good life. Anymore than that, I don't need.
