Is Shane Carwin A Top Ten Heavyweight After UFC 96 Win?

At UFC 96, Shane Carwin seized the largest win of his career in his TKO victory over top ten heavyweight Gabriel Gonzaga. Carwin continued his streak of finishing fights within a couple of minutes of the first round. However, up until the point of landing the big right that put Gonzaga down, he was getting handled. Gonzaga had him rocked a couple of times and took him down relatively easily. However, Carwin was able to weather the storm and get back to his feet rather quickly. With Carwin's performance against Gonzaga, and what little you've seen of him, how does he stack up against the other UFC heavyweights? Also, more importantly would you consider him a top ten heavyweight after this victory over Gonzaga?

We already knew he had fight-ending power in those wrecking balls he calls hands – besides him scrambling and recovering after being hurt what we learned was that he’s far from invincible (I thought he looked mad clumsy in the first exchange).
Velasquez would be nightmare fight for him (maybe even Dos Santos). I’d say he’s just outside the top 10 with this victory even though I rate Gonzaga pretty high notwithstanding his losses.
Bloody hell.

I said yes, but after looking over insidemma rankings, I put him just outside top 10.
1 Fedor Emelianenko
2 Josh Barnett
3 Andrei Arlovski
4 Frank Mir
5 Brock Lesnar
6 Randy Couture
7 Antonio Rodrigo Nogueria
8 Tim Sylvia
9 Gabriel Gonzaga
10 Alistair Overeem
11 Junior Dos Santos
He needs another fight..

Cawin, for me would beat Couture and Sylvia for sure on that list. He’s already taken out Gonzaga. He would give pretty much every one else a tough time and have a decent shot at beating them as well. So yeah, I have him in my top 10 for sure. The man is a beast. Great wrestling, strong as an ox and KO power. If he can improve his standup and be crisp with his punches, he’ll run through everyone.

He just beat Gonzaga.
Surely he takes the spot.
If you see Mark Coleman in person, drop $5 on the floor and watch the fun as he tries in vain to bend down and pick it up.
I get that.
but there guys on the list, who I think would move up.. Like congo and Cain V.

I like Carwin a lot, but his stand up is a little sloppy. Gonzaga hurt him badly and Neil Wain tagged him a couple of times and had him shaken, and Wain has average punching power.
That said if he works on his defence he could be unstoppable. If you can KO a top fighter with a short right like that then you have some serious power.
I like Carwin also…and if I were a betting man I definitely would have put some loot on him at UFC 96. The only thing that concerns me is that prior to the punch that put Gonzaga down, he was getting handled. The only things I learned from this Carwin win was that…
1. He can get back to his feet when taken down.
2. He doesn’t fold when faced with adversity.
I already knew he had big power…as evident during the Wellisch fight. I sooo want to see him go past the first round to get a chance to assess him overall. I’m still not completely sold on him being a threat to become champion just yet.
