Around SBN: Explaining Jeremy Lin's Early, Surprising Success

Tim Sylvia vs. Ray Mercer Will Happen

Sherdog with the news:

Speaking with Sherdog.com, promoter Monte Cox announced the six-round heavyweight fight would be rescheduled for June 13 in Alabama as the main event of Adrenaline III. The hybrid boxing-mixed martial arts event will be held at the 17,000-seat BJCC arena in Birmingham.

You may have read here where I reported that the boxing match had not been sanctioned by the New Jersey athletic commission last week.  I wrote:

It's interesting that Monte Cox is going to try and reschedule this bout.  Is he not going to respect the NJ athletic comissions wishes, and try to manipulate another sanctioning body like a little kid does their parents when they get told 'no'?

I guess he's not going to respect the New Jersey commission's decision not to sanction this event.  Which is kind of surprising being that Monte Cox has been in the business for a long time.  Then again, he does to crazy stuff like not having signed documentation with the fighters he manages, relying on handshake deals.  I don't think this is a good move on his part.  GOD forbid if something crazy were to happen.  The reason this bout is being allowed to happen is because Alabama doesn't have any regulatory body to not make the fight happen.  I wonder if this will affect Cox or his promotion if they ever try to do business with the New Jersey athletic commission again?  You betcha.

I actually know Monte’s sister-in-law, and she says he’s not really big on contracts just because that’s not how he rolls. It might not be the best idea for long-term business, but if someone wants to go shack up with someone else’s management it’s on them.

As for the Mercer v. Sylvia debacle.. does anyone really want to see it? I’m moderately intrigued by it, but there’s no way in hell I’d pay a dime for it.

These guys (Sylvia, Cox, and Mercer) must be hurting for cash and are under the absurd delusion that this is actually going to bring in some money. I mean, why else would they go through these lengths make this mediocre, at best, fight happen?

I can’t imagine Monte is hurting for money. He’s got a bunch of good fighters making decent money, although I can’t say the same for Sylvia and Mercer. I think big Tim needs to take a pay cut and come back to the UFC, if he still can.

That’s the only option he’s going to have shortly. Unless of course he goes to Japan to use his size to get into freakshow fights or something.

From what I’ve heard Japan doesn’t want anything to do with him.. Sylvia supposedly tried to get into Sengoku and Dream, and they flat out refused him. Which is wild, considering that they could do some Syvlia vs. Featherweight tournament.

lol

sylvia vs aoki. why wouldn’t japan want this? all jokes aside, tim was probably asking for too much money b/c i can’t think of any reason why they(japan) wouldn’t want him. in K-1 if not anything.

Well the money is a big part of it, because Sylvia is kindof a money whore. He got mad when guys like Lesnar were making that much money and wanted more, so he walked. On the books he made nearly a mill from Affliction, and after getting a taste of that he probably won’t walk away. Thing is that promotions like Dream know that he’s going to draw about as poorly as I would in Japan, and I’m not even a fighter! He’s a big goofy guy that’s asking a lot of money; it’s not like Zulu or Butterbean who you can hire for $20/20(if that).

I don’t know what sane person would. I am guessing that even Tim Sylvia’s parents are going to have a tough decision as to ordering this or not.

This has FAIL written all over it. It will be a struggle where the guy with the worst cardio will simply collapse after a marathon of painstaking and untechnical striking.

Bloody hell.

i would watch it for free. it would probably be the only time i would root for a boxer over an mma fighter, thats how much i can’t stand sylvia.
