Post TUF 10: What's Your Impression Of Rashad Evans Now?

I think it's safe to say that we pretty much knew what to expect from Rampage Jackson as a coach on The Ultimate Fighter, being that he had already been a coach on the show.  However, this was Rashad Evan's first appearance as a coach on the show, although he was a contestant and eventual winner of season 2.  In fact, his first appearance on the show probably molded the early part of his UFC career.  Many fans disliked him due to a variety of reasons, but most of it started with his run-in with then top dog Matt Hughes.  So a lot of fans grew to dislike Evans.  Whether it was his showboating, inability to finish fights early in his career, or whether you want to admit it or not...race.  Evan's caught grief for showboating after almost decapitating UFC legend Chuck Liddell at UFC 88.  He also caught flack for grabbing his crotch during his fight with Forrest Griffin at UFC 92.  Maybe his performance as a coach on this season of TUF has changed some minds though?

Admittedly, I've always been a fan of Evans because I thought the guy had potential out of this world.  Not to mention the fact that I was never bothered by his showboating, because more times than not the guy was always pretty respectful to his opponents.  However, I think Rashad did a great job as the coach of his team on this season of TUF.  He brought in quality guys so the contestants could learn new things.  He gave sound advice to quite a few of them, and even attempted to help some of the guys on Team Rampage.  I know quite a few fans still disliked Evans prior to the season 10 of TUF airing, so it would be interesting to see what everyone's impression of him is after watching this season.  Have any of you that disliked Evans had a change of heart, or do you still not like him as a fighter?

I think he has converted alot of people to fans. Me, I was always on the wagon — no one gave him any credit during TUF 2 and the dude is always respectful (say what you will about showboating, he felt the need to do it even when he was losing against Machida — just a thrill of the fight thing). Sure he is confident bordering on cocky, but humble when required and appropriate…

Bloody hell.

says it all really…and he deserved every bit of it

I’d say you’ve confused him with someone else. That fool was humbled when Machida crumbled him, it wasn’t required of him so much beaten into him for abusing sportsmen like Griffin unprovoked. And Memorial Day he’ll have it beaten into him again and maybe then he’ll learn his place.

I’m only partially on the wagon..lol…this season did show a much better side to him but he’s always showed that side in most of his fights, so it really wasn’t a big revelation to me….however, he has a career after fighting, we now know that

I respect his skill level, but I cant root for him. I know all fighters have to build a “fighters ego” to establish confidence etc, but his constant crotch grabbing, nipple twisting persona has turned me off from day one.

The show just reinforced my appreciation of Rashad both as a fan and as a person.

Likewise, the show also justified my long standing dislike for Rampage and everything he stands for. Biggest a-hole in MMA. Ever.

I hope and pray Rashad knocks him the fuck out.

I'm a little surprised you mentioned race but oh well.

I never had a problem with Rashad prior to TUF. He annoyed me a little but it’s not like I couldn’t stand him like I did with Frank Mir or Rampage. Rashad still has an inner-*sshole but I think everyone needs that to counter any Rampage-like person they may encounter.

I really thought Rashad showed a lot of poise and professionalism with his team. When there were teachable moments, Rashad took the time to teach the fighters, and when he felt they should learn on their own he gave them the space and freedom to do so (Mitrione & Nelson).

Funny thing is, the show made me appreciate Rampage as a comedian. He truly is a funny motherf*cker.

33 Wins. Yeah, I said it.

Seriously

Race is centainly an issue in this fight. I was there at UFC 88, almost everyone in that building was chanting U.S.A. for the MAt Brown “Stun Gun” fight. I know it is a touchy subject but race plays a role in MMA. It is the reason so many people where booing Rashad after he KO’ed Chuck. Was that about race…idk. But the racial undertones are here in MMA for sure. btw my jaw dropped when Evans Ko’ed Chuck, I didn’t make a sound for like 5 minutes.

I messed that up...

Really!?

Would the same crowd boo Anderson Silva for KTFOing a white dude? Nope, and that’s because he is the sh!t. Rashad is a shit.

That last comment

had nothing to do with Rashad’s race or color btw.

by Dirty_Sanchez on Dec 4, 2009 1:15 PM EST up reply actions

How Do You Explain

why the crowd booed him for such a spectacular KO? Or how the japanese portrayed Sokoudjou? FYI they marketed him as living in the African Jungle killing lions with only his hands.

yea

I wish I had a recorder on me at UFC 88…

Because

Rashad is a d!ck and people love Chuck. As far as the Japanese (which you didn’t capitalize btw, RACIST ) goes, we’re not in Japan. Even so, there is a difference between simply recognizing racial differences and hating people of different races.

lol

I just just pointing out bigotry in MMA.

by Erich Vowell on Dec 4, 2009 2:14 PM EST up reply actions

people booed machidas win over rua, is that bigotry too? no.

Hilarious, Sanchez.

People LOOOOOVE Silva…as do I.

seriously

Honest to God that may be the most irresponible think ever said on here. Since people booed Rashad after he knocked out one of the most popular fighters in UFC history you claim there are racial undertones. If Evans was white he still would have been booed. He’s a average fighter that acts like a stuck up jackass. That’s why I hate him. And because he went to MSU. MSU sucks dirty ass.

by Dr_Cox19 on Dec 4, 2009 11:00 PM EST up reply actions

dunno who you were directing that too

the whole section where I was sitting was talking all kinds of shit about Rashad even before the fight started….much less when he KTFO Liddell…

btw…he’s much better than an average fighter…don’t let your dislike for him blind you….I pretty much hated Matt Hughes back in the day…but I wasn’t saying he was an average fighting in 2005…

We are not going to turn this into politics, etc..
simply recognizing racial differences and hating people of different races.

But I know what I heard…that is all.

Race does play a part in who you cheer for and who you don’t….it’s just human nature

but it doesn’t necessarily mean they’re racist

you are more apt to cheer for someone that looks like you

Awesome read. Thanks again.

I get the same feeling when I watch fights like that. You can ‘feel’ the racism/bigotry in the crowd when they go full throttle for fights like that (Evans vs. Liddell). It’s unfortunate, but it exists. I totally get where you’re coming from, Kelvin.

33 Wins. Yeah, I said it.

I liked Rashad before the show…still like him now. A lot of people have seen him in a different light. I could do w/o the lame trash-talking back and forth
You’re a bitch
Make me your bitch now
You’re a bitch
Make me your bitch now

(repeat, repeat, repeat)
but overall, Rashad is a good coach. It seems like he took the job very seriously and really does want to help the fighters learns. Rampage, on the other hand, isn’t a coach and he admitted it. He goes down with Hughes & Shamrock in the crappy TUF coach Hall of Shame.

Wait…Rashad is black? :O

by The Real T-Bone on Dec 4, 2009 2:29 PM EST reply actions

Exactly.

That little trash talking segment was funny because you knew neither of them were going to do anything. If anything, Rashad came out on top of that one…by a hair.

33 Wins. Yeah, I said it.

if anything, i thought how rashad blew off Hughe’s comment about watermelon when they were out eating during that season hughes coached, showed me that rashad was a cool guy. he could have’ flipped out and made a huge scene, but let hughes just look like a jerk. if nothing else, rampage did so little for his guys, by default rashad looked good on this season. not a huge fan am i now, but def like the guy more and would be a bit more interested in his next fight. too bad it’s silva, who i love to see win.

I was a fan of his until recently. I’m not even sure when and how it changed but now I can’t stand him. But I dislike Thiago Silva more so I’ll be rooting for Rashad.

I’ve just always been a fan of Quinton’s fights, ever since he was in Pride back in the day. But I liked Rashad coming into this season too. I’m an even bigger fan now. I think that there’s a lot to like about Evans. Not just for what he brings to the table from a fighting standpoint either. He strikes me a guy who’s got it together. I’m not huge on the occasional showboating either but if that’s the guy’s biggest sin then there’s not much to criticize. I’ll be rooting for him against Thiago Silva. I’m really looking forward to that fight because I think it will be a good one.

by Rich Wyatt on Dec 4, 2009 7:16 PM EST reply actions

I was a major fan of Quinton’s before he became all christian and lame.

Bloody hell.

by 3PA on Dec 4, 2009 7:25 PM EST reply actions

The Jardine scene bothered me

Jardine shows up, Jackson is all smiles, went up to him, greeted him, they were respectful to each other, and that was it.

Then Evans shows up and starts trash talking just for the hell of it. JAckson wasn’t perfect, but Evans didn’t come off completely clean either.

The time when he told Jackson that he should pay every one of his fighters for losing the volleyball game was kinda low too, there’s no need for that.
