MMA4Real's Technique Of The Day: Escaping North-South Position
The video is brought to us courtesy of Cageside MMA. Adam Song and Cesar Moreno demonstrate a North-South position escape that can be used in both BJJ and MMA competitions. The key to this move besides obvious drilling of the move is this:
The KEY point in any escape from the bottom is to maintain a good frame with your arms, to keep space between your opponent and yourself. If you let him flatten out and crush you, you will be hard pressed to use any escape, while creating this "hole" will allow any number of escapes.
Now go practice!

The perennial problem while escaping submissions in MMA (as compared to just BJJ), is the striking. I find myself going blank and pretty much giving my neck or arm away when I’m being hit. When its just jitz though, its easier to relax and pull off escapes.
An arm out north south choke is easier to escape than an arm in. In the video, he never really comes close to locking in the submission. You can’t take an opponents back with your neck trapped even if your opponent hasn’t sunken in the choke real tight.

Yea
In the video…he’s demonstrating escaping the north-south position…not a choke from the north-south position…you are right though…if a choke was applied…you probably couldn’t pull this off.

yeah, the north south position by itself isn’t too useful at all. I mean, why would you give up side control for the north south if you aren’t looking for the quick sub…
And to escape the north south, your best bet would be to scramble when your opponent is transitioning from side control. You’ll find yourself pretty much free for a few seconds before he’s in a position to take your neck unless the guy on top is a big wrestler.

I agree
I see guys in N-S that just sit there for a while without doing anything as well though..
