Introducing Coastal Combat Circuit In North Carolina

Coastal Combat Circuit

Those of you that follow the site regularly have probably become familiar with the Amateur Fight League(AFL) promotion that's based out of North Carolina.  Now one of the co-founders of the AFL has branched off and started a new company entitled the Coastal Combat Circuit.  This new company will promote both grappling and MMA competition in North Carolina.  Coastal Combat Circuit will present "Mission Submission"  in Elizabeth City, NC on Saturday, January, 30th, 2009.  This is the 1st in a series of submission grappling events that will be related to the MMA events that will take place as well.  The grappling competitions are nationally ranked events.  If you want to register for the January event, you can click this link or call the number in the picture.

From a young mma fighter’s point of view, I do not see much point in entering these tournaments.

Don’t grab the pitch forks yet hear me out.

I feel my time would be spent more effectively training for an MMA style fight rather then a pure grappling event. The ground and pound aspect adds such an element to the grappling game that to train for an event that does not allow ground and pound does not seem like a smart investment.

That is not to say submission training is something to be neglected, but it should be trained in a manner where you are protecting yourself from strikes rather then solely concentrating on attacking/defending submissions.

But of course this is coming from someone competing and training solely for MMA fights. I believe the rules are different enough that to be truly completive you should be devoting yourself to one or the other and not both especially when you have limited time.

I feel you

A lot of the kats that participate in these tournaments only do BJJ though….others that do MMA do it just for the competition aspect I suppose..
