5 Questions Going Into UFC 107
As I've mentioned before, I think UFC 107 is a pretty solid card. In fact, when you look at the injury plagued UFC 108, you kind of have to be thankful for what we'll get to see this weekend. There's a title on the line, something we haven't been able to witness since UFC 104. A heavyweight fight that has some real animosity between the two fighters. A lightweight bout that has the potential to be exciting and fast paced, or an absolute snooze fest depending on what happens. However, there's a few questions that popped in my head earlier today. Let's take a look at five of them after the jump.
SBN coverage of UFC 107: Penn vs. Sanchez
1. What's next for BJ Penn if he gets past Diego Sanchez...does he stay at LW or seek new challenges?2. What's next for Cheick Kongo if he gets past Frank Mir...is he one win away from a title shot?
3. What's next for Clay Guida If he gets past Kenny Florian...would he be a contender at that point?
4. How far away is Alan Belcher from being a contender if he beats Gouveia?
5. What's next for Stefan Struve if he gets past MMA veteran Paul Buentello?

1. BJ Penn will stay at lightweight. There are more legitimate challengers for the crown like Maynard and Edgar.
2. Kongo is not 1-win away from the title shot.
3. Guida definitely looks like a contender but he can not compete against Penn. He will make the fight look exciting.
4. Neither guy is a contender. Gouveia lost to Goran Reljic and Marquardt. Belcher has recently done well against Kang and Akiyama but he still has a way to go. After all, he did lose to Kendall Grove, Jason Day and Okami.
5. Another heavyweight opponent. This fight really doesn’t have a big meaning for either fighter.

I would say, BJ cleaned out the division after Sanchez. Im sorry, but Gray Maynard is similar to Sherk in some ways, he not going to threaten BJ standing or with his wrestling and Edgar should be fighting at 145, maybe 135.

doesn't matter
If Maynard wins his next fight that will be 5 in a row! He will have beaten everyone he’s faced. It doesn’t matter if anyone doesn’t think he can win. Maynard has deserved his shot.

- If BJ wins, for me, I’d like to see him move up and take on new challenges.Diego is the final frontier at LW at the moment. If he gets past Diego, I don’t see him being motivated enough to train as hard for the likes of Maynard, Guida, Kenny etc. Couple of tuneup matches at WW before a showdown with GSP sounds so much more appealing than defending the LW belt over and over against guys clearly inferior to him in every department.
- Kongo isn’t one, not 2, not even 3 wins away from a title shot. If he beats Mir, he’ll run into a big wrestler next, get demolished and will have to start all over again. Kongo will never be the no.1 contender. He’s too one dimensional.
- Yeah but I don’t see him beating Kenny.
- Alan Belcher will be a contender once he gets rid of that ugly tattoo. So basically, never.
- If Struve wins, I’d like to see him fight Ben Rothwell next.

1. What’s next for BJ Penn if he gets past Diego Sanchez…does he stay at LW or seek new challenges? he fights Edgar/Maynard as is the general consensus…then moves to welterweight to fight Fitch/Koscheck/Alves before rematching GSP
2. What’s next for Cheick Kongo if he gets past Frank Mir…is he one win away from a title shot? Maybe, if he decisively beats JDS in a potential contenders fights
3. What’s next for Clay Guida If he gets past Kenny Florian…would he be a contender at that point? He gets whichever of Edgar/Maynard isn’t fighting BJ (should BJ reign over Diego)
4. How far away is Alan Belcher from being a contender if he beats Gouveia? [far enough away that this question won’t be dignified with a legitimate answer (",) ]
5. What’s next for Stefan Struve if he gets past MMA veteran Paul Buentello? Pat Barry
