Shane McMahon: Good Or Bad For The UFC?

Promoted To Front Page From Fanposts By Kelvin Hunt And Title Slightly Edited

Heavy.com has run an interesting article that explores the now well known fraternizing of top UFC brass with Shane McMahon, a bastion of the WWE empire. They pose some very legitimate and intriguing questions, the most pertinent I believe being

What does he offer the UFC that makes his potential hiring one of the most intriguing stories of 2010?

While it is no shame to say the UFC has yet to attain mainstream status, it has come a long way from the "No holds barred" spectacle of UFC 1. It is now a legitimate sport and every year garners more support and a larger fan base for the high octane, professionally skilled athletes who compete combatively in the worlds premier proving ground. However for all this success, the UFC (or more aptly its parent company Zuffa) crave succe$$. They have yet to witness their product being sold in "popular" shops, nationally and globally. It is unquestionably their end goal and realistically that of hardcore fans too, to see UFC merchandise being sold in shops like Wal-Mart and various other commercial and sporting outlets. While we might not share in the commercialisation of the sport we love, I do believe we would all agree that it would go a long way to defining it as a mainstream sport in the popular psyche. It's not that we enjoy seeing nor actually "want" to see merchadise being touted to the masses, it's the cold reality that such a step would bring a relevancy to the UFC that is missing.  It might also come hand in hand with such outlandish plans as seeing UFC on network tv. I for one live in hope, out of my love for the sport.

Star-divide

The man Shane would likely replace, recently hired executive Bryan Johnston, has failed to impress Zuffa in his short tenure on the job. Johnston came to the company from Burton Snowboards and has a very strong reputation. But since joining Zuffa this year, he hasn't been able to secure the major deals company officials were expecting. McMahon, though he might be tempted to jump off the Octagon and onto Joe Rogan and Mike Goldberg’s announce table, can certainly do better than that.

The sticking point, as it so often seems to be in the fight business, is money. McMahon, who recently cashed out more than $50 million in WWE stock (and still has another $30 million in stock), doesn’t want to be a mere employee. He wants to buy into a thriving company, joining Dana White as a minority owner of the company owned by Station’s Casino magnates Frank and Lorenzo Fertitta. The Fertittas have struggled mightily, and very publicly, with a real-estate bust in Las Vegas that caught them unprepared. They may actually, as strange as this seems for two billionaires, need the money. That may be the difference between whether we see Shane McMahon inside the UFC Octagon in 2010.

Shane is undoubtedly a shrewd business man and is well aware of the appeal and potential that the UFC brand has to offer. This is reflected in his interest in the company but also the news that he is seeking a share in the company as opposed to an employee's check. Time will eventually tell how valuable Zuffa see his services as being, and so will his contract agreement. Firstly though it  does remain to be seen do you the hardcore fans wish to see Shane's involvement with the UFC? Do you believe he has the ability to help establish a UFC empire?

I don’t know if they will let him buy into the company…however, from a what he could help them do stand point…he would be a very good acquisition in regards to their expansion plans…I’m way past the whole WWE ish…the guy knows business….it’s not like he’s going to jump in the octagon and cut a promo with Dana White or anything….

This dude can generate money and interest – I’m sure he could allow the UFC access to certain places years ahead of plan.

Bloody hell.

i think whether he's allowed buy in will be a major sticking point

i see Zuffa being very reluctant to sell part of the company to McMahon, but i see him being very reluctant to sign on for anything but a stake in the company. stalemate. i wonder is he looking for equity with Dana’s stake…?

no problem with shane being part of ufc but not his dad. i'll bet the thought of that has the ferttita's

attention.he could bring in sis and maybe one day they can expand to women in the octagon and she could find the talent and make it work. i really enjoy woman’s fighting. the fights they put on showtime rarely are disappointing.

i find it odd that vince would want no part of it.

i basically don’t know anybody who admits to watching wrestling anymore. it’s demographics are probably 8 -18 year old boys and single moms. mma has surpassed wrastling boxing, nascar and hockey. the only conclussion i can come away is he is of the age where boxing was his generations thing while shane is mid thirties? the demographics of mma 18-39 year olds.

The only downside I see to this

is that the ignorant, MMA hating “mainstream” (like journalists, sports talk hosts, “Around the Horn” type morons) would use this as another talking point (like they did with Brock) as to why MMA isn’t legit. They wont mention how Shane was a big reason why the WWE did/does so well internationally and had been an asset to that company. It will all be “See, they are just another WWE” coming from the guys who wont even sit an watch an MMA card and already have no clue what they are talking about.

Yea

I see that..but don’t think it’ll be a big deal in the grand scheme of things…once MMA becomes legal in NY….it’s a wrap here in America..they’ll be forced to educate themselves on the sport IMO.

Shane McMahon joining the team would be great for the UFC, at the end of the day. He brings connections and talent that they could really use, when you think about it. He was the head of global marketing in WWE, which is exactly what the UFC is trying desperately to accomplish. Little known fact: the revenue for the WWE internationally dwarfs their stateside revenue, and has for a little while now. They’re trying to crack into international markets, and he’s been dealing with these markets, and winning them over for years. Forrest also made the point the other day that he could be instrumental in getting other areas of revenue up. Documentary DVDs, and digital distribution. Did anyone ever consider a “Rise and Fall of Ken Shamrock” DVD?

The problem here is that McMahon probably isn’t going to be someone who will take a 9-5 for $100k a year. The article mentioned that he just cashed out $50M, and that’s not counting all of the millions that he probably has banked up over the years. A guy like that doesn’t NEED to work, but if he is, he’s probably not going to want to be just some udde on the payroll, he’ll want to have a stake in the company, if not a part owner.

neil does ken shamrock get a small piece of the money pie to that dvd?

or is that why he is suing the ufc. ken shamrock has a house on pyramid lane in north reno. i’ve seen him quite a few time’s. he always looks miserable. not kidding. he looks like he missed the gravy train.

Well, Shamrock is suing the UFC because they cut him loose in mid-contract, like they do a ton of other people, and he’s calling it breach of contract. The problem with that guy is that he’s legit crazy. Take a guy like Tito and how he hypes a fight? He’s just a prick. Ken reacting? That’s his crazy coming out, and in a big way. He actually opened a gym not too far from where I’m at, and was going to go nab an interview at it’s grand opening.. but then realized he’d probably take a shot at me.

Regarding monies though, depending on how the contracts are, he might get some money, he might not. Like WWE “performers” have it written such that when a DVD comes out with one of their matches, they get residuals. So if I’m random dude in random match that keeeps getting stuck on compilation DVDs? Yeah, I get a check every month.

they way i've seen him look i would not be surprised he would take a shot at you

he just looks miserable. i don’t even dislike the guy. i actually though he had some solid mma skills in the early days but i guess the ufc did not pay him enough to get beatdown by ortiz a few times.
