WEC 44 Ratings: 414,000 On Versus

According to MMAJunkie:

This past week's broadcast of "WEC 44: Brown vs. Aldo" on Versus scored a 0.5 household rating and averaged an audience of 414,000 viewers.

That's 5,000 fewers viewers than WEC 43 which featured a main event between Donald Cerrone vs. Ben Henderson last month.  Now the WEC has expanded their international audience with recent tv deals announced for Australia and Brazil.  However it's pretty sad that over 2 million people watch The Ultimate Fighter each week, and only a small percentage of that tuned in to watch the last two WEC events.  To be sure Zuffa can do a better job of promoting that promotion.  I mean they are going to have to since they just re-signed with Versus right?

To be fair, WEC will always be small time simply due to their focus on the lighter weight classes. A grown man weighing less than 150lbs is nowhere near the norm so people can’t identify with the fighters very well.

I’m 6’5" and 195lbs so seeing grown men competing in sports that are smaller than I was when I was twelve is not something that I can identify with. I can apreciate and admire the skills but there is no personal aspect. Why do you think HWs and LHWs are the biggest draws in western mma organizations? Because they are either massive physical specimines who display agility and strength that amazes us or they are fighters who are at an attainable physical level that we as fans can strive to achieve.

Unfortunatly talent and skill are not enough to translate into marketability, you need to have the image and presence as well.

Some people are like Slinkies... not really good for anything, but you still can't
help but smile when you see one tumble down the stairs...

Yeah, I prefer watching the lighter weight class fighters in general. Not because they are lighter, but because they usually have what are, in my opinion, more interesting fights. However, it is a reality that the heavier weight classes generally (with some very notable exceptions) sell more tickets and pay-per-view buys. I can understand that. It’s not a commentary on their skill. It should never be a surprise that Kevin “Kimbo Slice” Ferguson gets higher ratings than Jose Aldo. From a business standpoint, MMA is another option competing for entertainment dollars. Is it fair that Jim Carrey gets paid more per movie than Anthony Hopkins? Is he a better actor? It’s just the free market working.

Ehhh

Point taken…but Faber/Pulver didn’t have over one million viewers for nothing…they promoted that event like they were supposed too…and had promoted Faber pretty well during that time….they could do that again if they took the time to promote the brand and individual fighters…but they don’t.

Ratings

They lost alot of ratings due to the fact that Vs. is no longer on DirecTV. I missed the cerrone fight along with this one. Pisses me off to be honest.

I think that had a LOT to do with the poor rating. However, let’s also remember that TUF was on at the same time.. and the lead-in to TUF was UFC 105 from the weekend before. I’d say that the blame is mostly on the part of Zuffa, for counter-programming itself. Reminds me of car companies competing with themselves, like running commercials for both the Dodge Caravan and the Chrysler Town & Country.

neil you know more of the business side of mma. why can't wec be on spike too?

i would say one third of my favorite fights were on wec. when you got guys like jose aldo, jamie varner, donald cerrone and miguel torres etc. plus when carlos condit was on he had an incredible fight with a korean guy who had some serious judo throws. i can watch that fight anytime and enjoy it. it’s that good. i’m very average in size. the same height as dan henderson who they list at 6 feet 1 inch but in reality since i walked right by him at the condit/larsen fight at the hard rock in las vegas i know he is 5 feet 10 inches and not very big for his size. don’t get me wrong incredible mma fighter just nowhere as big as they claim. we were the same height. manny g. they list at 5 feet 5inches but all you have to do is replay the season with diaz as champion and they say he is five foot 3 inches. they add a few inches to many fighters but this is besides the point. i like the wec and if they could get better ratings on spike i think they should do it. let versus show bullriding and college football and hockey which is entertaining. let spike run the ufc empire. just my 2 cents.

yes i am obsessive, obnoxious, in your face and all about covering the spread. those are my good qualities.

The long story short is that the WEC is contractually bound to Vs. It was a while back when Zuffa bought WEC, and from what little I remember, it wasn’t because they wanted the talent or the extra penetration (via another TV station), as much as they wanted to block some other organization from doing something. Vs. actually has a pretty big stake in the WEC, and they just signed a renewal of their deal, which I believe is good for another year or two.

So realistically speaking, the idea that everyone (and I mean EVERYONE) has to just merge the two organizations while 100% logical on the surface, isn’t going to happen due to the contracts in place. Of course, why Zuffa would re-up with Vs. is a bigger question than why they don’t merge the organizations, because quite frankly, the seperate branding (and the aforementioned comepting with themselves) is just stupid, especially when they’ve got thin cards nowadays that could use some bolstering.
