Andrei Arlovski Where You At?

Following recent injuries/illnesses to top fighters Brock Lesnar (Champion) and Minotauro Nogueira (perennial contender) the UFC finds itself in quite the predicament. Yes they have a plethora of fights they can make and indeed have made. However with the widely regarded P4p King residing in opposing promotion Strikeforce there never really has been a bigger battle of the Heavyweights in my opinion. The UFC most definitely has that little deeper strength in depth, but Strikeforce are worthy opponents and have amassed a more than respectable roster of fighters in their Heavyweight Division. There is one fighter though who remains un-contracted, Andrei "The Pitbull" Arlovski.
Despite being knocked clean out in his past two outings he hasn't lost his mojo. I for one would be quite intrigued by Carwin/Velasquez/Duffee/Mir/Kongo v Arlovski, or for that matter Overeem/Werdum/Silva/Fedor II vs. Arlovski to name but a few. The bidding war is no doubt already underway for the Belarussians services, and no doubt he will undoubtedly command a nice nice asking price. Especially when he could yet play a decisive role in the success or failure of Strikeforces venture into the market with their heavy focus on the HW division.

Good fanpost
I’ll front this later…I think Andrei’s is a weird situation…he’s coming off two losses…but could give anybody in the HW division a tough fight…the UFC probably don’t want to pay him what he was making beforehand…but they could use him right now. He was negotiating with Strikeforce and supposed to sign with them about a month ago I think…but it feel through at the 11th hour….I’d like to see him in the UFC…simply because there are a lot of new fights for him there….unlike SF where its’ all re-matches for the most part…

thanks Kelvin! much appreciated
i have the exact same outlook on his potential future, it bodes well for him that he has the strongest poker hand

I don’t think money is the issue with UFC. Considering he is coming off two losses, the UFC can probably get him at their price. But considering he is coming off two knockout losses to guys Dana has discredited continuously in the media, I don’t see Andrei in the UFC for while.

UFC is not in Arlovski's future
Because Dana will never admit he was wrong. Dana will never say to Arlovski sorry for trying to force you to sign a contract with one fight left. I an sorry for putting you on the undercard in your last fight. And I am sorry for saying you were not a high-caliber fighter. No way does AA get in the UFC. The UFC will get some young talent from across the world and foster their development like they did with JDS
So what you're saying is
Dana will never swallow his pride for the good of the UFC? I’m inclined to agree with you. But, he has let Tito back into the UFC twice after very, very public and pretty deep rifts.

It’s weird because Arlovski at one point was a big ticket, then the UFC dropped him, he took those two hard losses, then everybody said they didn’t want anything to do with him. Strikeforce was supposed to announce a few HW signings a week or two ago, and I’m pretty sure one was going to be Monson, but the other.. well, the only other HW talent available is Ricco, big Tim, and Arlovski. And out of those three, the only one that makes sense to announce is Arlovski.

UFC never dropped him, they just were not matching what Affliction was giving him. The issue with him going to UFC he suffered KO losses to their Main Eventers on the CBS show. That kind of will make their heavyweight division look inferior.

I don’t mean that they dropped him in the sense that he was cut, just that they wouldn’t pay the bucks that he wanted. At the time I don’t believe there WAS an Affliction (at least the promotion), it’s just that he wanted a sh*t-ton of money from them, and they weren’t going to pay any more than they already were. I think that in the here and now they’d like to have him, but like you mentioned he’s damaged goods because of the two vicious KOs.. and I’m sure he’s still commanding a much higher payday than what he deserves.

Affliction
was putting together their first card at the time AA fought his last UFC fight….at UFC 82…but I think the UFC had an opportunity to match what they were offering or something like that…

Yeah, usually the contracts are such that they’ve got the right to match offers from other companies for a month or two after the contract expires.

what happened to Strikeforce signing 2 new hw’s in a week 2 weeks ago? arlovski, lashley and even barnett’s name was bandied around. arlovski might do well in K-1 and there were rumors of that going around as well. he’s still a very dangerous and marketable hw imo.
I’d be scared to see Arlovski in K-1. Granted, not ALL those guys are heavy hitters, but they’re a helluva lot more accurate than the dudes he’s been beating up in MMA. That would be a career fraught with KOs all the time.

neil
the gloves are alot bigger in K-1 so they offer more protection, that’s if he actually keeps his hands up and his head moving. i also think the ring favors arlovski more b/c he is a rhythm fighter and takes a little while to get warmed up. i think a.a. is already a K-1 level striker, punches and kicks. he was sparring and holding with top hw boxers before his fight with fedor, according to roach. freddie was pretty high on him and doesn’t throw arounfd praise just for any fighter. my opinion is a bit biased, i’ll admit b/c i’m such a huge fan of his.
his chin, defense and mental status is always going to be in question, no matter what discipline he choses. i just wanna see him fight again regardless.
I think he’s got the skill too; Arlovski certainly has the skill to compete in K-1. Even though the gloves are bigger, dudes get KO’d in K-1 all the time. Sure, they offer more protection defensively, since they’re much larger, but it’s also a lot more tempting to throw kicks because there’s no risk of a takedown. I see Arlovski getting killed by most anyone in the GP (December 5th: DON’T FORGET!) this year, really.

Andrei’s in a weird situation. He is a very talented offensive fighter but lacks a world class ability to take punishment. I’m not sure how to steer the career of a guy like that. He’s too inconsistent to establish a run at the top, but he’s talented enough that on any given night he could catch about anybody, especially in today’s weakened heavyweight division. One could say that his fight with Emelianenko was, in many ways, a perfect microcosm of his career. He was on fire early winning the round and then got caught because of a momentary lapse (albeit from a better fighter, admittedly).
