The UFC Will Create An Interim Heavyweight Title And Lesnar Home After Minor Surgery
That's what UFC president Dana White told the LA Times:
White told The Times on Tuesday that he will schedule an interim heavyweight title fight during Lesnar's absence and that he's "working on it right now."
Let's take a look at some potential candidates:
-Shane Carwin is out with a knee injury, but didn't have knee surgery as previously reported. He's available after UFC 108.
-Cain Velasquez was originally scheduled to face Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira at UFC 108, until Nog pulled out with a staph infection.
-Frank Mir is fighting Cheick Kongo at UFC 107
-Junior dos Santos is fighting Gabriel Gonzaga at UFC 108
Of course Brock Lesnar and Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira will be out for a while. Who would you like to see fight for the UFC interim heavyweight title? Shane Carwin vs. Cain Velasquez is probably the most intriguing, but both are still largely unproven. They were originally scheduled to clash at UFC 104, before Carwin was pulled out of that match up to face Brock Lesnar at UFC 106. Cain Velasquez went on to destroy MMA veteran Ben Rothwell at UFC104. However, Carwin was the UFC's #1 contender, and the winner of Velasquez/Nogueira would have faced the winner of Carwin/Lesnar. That's my pick in regards to who they'll choose.
In other news, Brock Lesnar is home recuperating after having minor intestinal surgery. There could be a need for further surgery, but it's going to be a wait and see approach with that at this time.

I wouldn’t mind Velasquez vs. Dos Santos, to be honest. I’m expecting Carwin vs. Velasquez, though.

They will probably do Carwin vs Velasquez
In general, these interim belts only make sense if the “real” champ is out long enough for the interim champ to defend that belt.

Yea
Depending on when they do this fight….and if Lesnar needs more surgery…that could very well be the case…

Velasquez/Carwin is probably the most logical thing to do right now, taking everything into account.
Bloody hell.

Apparently Carwin posted on the UG that the UFC are considering him vs. Velasquez for interim.
I'm the kind of girl who loves to watch a GOOD fight!

mint
lets finally see it, i don’t think Velasquez will be able to handle the size discrepancy which is a big pity cos i love the dude. he has a massive heart! always brings it and looks to consistently learn the game and in doing so improve his own
SlickRick nailed a beaut tho with JDS v CV too, wont happen immediately tho…

i think its gay! if brock is going to be out for a long time then he needs to relinguish his belt to the ufc. start a tourny for the hw belt. first match being mir and kongo winner faces winner of gonzaga dos santos.only problem is we need another semi final. maybe cro cop vs rothwell and carwin vs ?. when brock is better then he gets first crack at his belt.what fighter wants to wear a interim belt in these circumstances. be kinda like playing dress up, no?i know cro cop vs rothwell in a hw title mix is week but its filler. maybe throw slice in there somewhere for ratings lol

no man.
the dude won it fair and square, did you look at what Felix posted?!

Thats what is happening here, unless Brock is coming back sooner which i imagine he won’t in which case interim belt. You can’t strip a dude due to illness unless he’s retiring/out for years…it’d be unethical. There are only 3 dudes who’ve earned the right IMO to be considered for contendership at the mo, JDS, velasquez and carwin (big nog is injured…) the rest can wait

Right
this is a textbook example of a situation that calls for an interim belt

if nothing else, it was nice to have some linear-quality to the heavyweight division with frank mir/lesnar rematched. sigh such a plagued division.

As long as the UFC doesn't implement "Super" and "Diamond" champions
Then I’m alright with interim titles. I suppose Velasquez-Carwin makes the most sense for this, but I can see the UFC thinking about waiting on that fight and building them both up. Carwin-Dos Santos could be a possibility I think since Carwin was already set to fight for the title.
Yes! Yes! In the face!

Interim belt mean absolutely nothing…other than making the fake title fight a five-rounder.

naw
it means this is the dude deputizing for the in-capacitated champ… i can appreciate what you’re saying though. i guess i just wouldn’t prescribe to it :)

If they make Mir vs. Kongo for the interim title...
Then my dream of seeing Kongo as HW champ might just be realized!

Ha
I don’t think the will though….it’s so close to that fight…it would be difficult to promote it….not to mention there’s already a title fight on that card…unless they move it to UFC 108?

No, they probably won’t. Like you said, it’s too close to the fight. I can dream though!
