UFC 105 Results: Brandon Vera Beats Himself via Unanimous Decision Against Randy Couture

I picked Brandon Vera to win his fight against Randy Couture at UFC 105.  However, I wrote earlier this week asking what if Vera lost a close decision against Couture.  I knew it was a real possibility, simply because of Vera's propensity to not let his offense go.  He came out of the gates on fire in the first round, hurting Couture with several punches and kicks.  However, Couture's experience allowed him to weather the storm and implement some stand and pray octagon control for the rest of the round.  The second round was no different until Vera finally landed a body kick that hurt Couture and sent him down to the mat.  However, again Couture's experience paid off because Vera wasn't able to finish him.  The third round was more of the same, but Couture was able to implement some of his patented dirty boxing early in the round.  He landed some punches, but didn't really do much damage.  However, he continued to hug Vera up against the cage for the majority of the round.  That is until Vera achieved a takedown of his own, and eventually mounted Couture.  However, he wasn't able to do much damage in the position.

Do I think Vera should have won the decision?  Probably, I think he did more damage than Couture did and that should count for more than octagon control in my opinion.  However, you can't blame Couture, because he fought exactly how I said he should if he wanted to win this fight and Vera didn't.  Vera was visibly upset that he didn't get the unanimous decision victory, but the fact of the matter is he beat himself.

There's absolutely NO reason why he should have let Couture constantly pin him against the cage.  I haven't re-watched the fight yet.  But, I would be willing to bet that out of 15 minutes, 4-5 of those minutes were spent with Vera pinned against the cage and Couture doing nothing offensively.  Why on earth would he allow that to happen?  You know you can't let the fight goto the judges.  The fact of the matter is he should have been able to put a 46 year old Randy Couture away.  I take nothing away from Couture, but you saw what was evident when Vera had spacing and let his offense flow.  Why he didn't realize that in the fight is beyond me?  I mean that's stuff he should have known before the fight.  He beat himself, so there's no reason for him to get mad at the judges.  Did you agree with the judges decision?

i did extremely well. i won 4 out of my 5 fights

what is funny is kang had bisping in trouble in first round but did not capitalized. kang has no cardio. mike swick had the worst gameplan i have ever seen. he had the reach on hardy on he wants to clinch. i got hardy at +200 too. everybody in reno took swick in last hour. best fight i saw was ross pearson was aaron riley. pearson has got seem serious striking skills and alot of dirty boxing in him. it was a great free card on spike. i congratulate spike tv for a great show.

after the tuf show was over. matt brown sure got out of the kimura that wilks was applying. i had him too. it was a great show and i think i got the benefit of the doubt with randy b/c vera had him hurt visible twice in the match but i guess he did not do enough for the judges. i know he thought he won b/c i don’t remember joe interviewing him. congratulations to the tcu horn frogs who will get a bcs bowl bid by beating utah 55 -28. they will represent the mwc well. peace!

I actually scored it 29-28 Couture along with the Swedish commentators so I was a little suprised when Joe Rogan went off lol

Bloody hell.

I mean

it wasn’t as bad a decision as Shogun/Machida for sure…I could see it for Couture…I didn’t score it for him though..

It’s like you said Vera beat himself… I kept yelling at the TV for him to back up a step or two (and get into the center of the cage) instead of engaging directly after the ref broke them up, making it very easy for Randy to immediately push him up against the fence again.

Bloody hell.

My problem with the decision wasn’t that Couture didn’t control the fight, because he masterfully hugged Vera for what seemed like hours. If you look at cumulative damage throughout the rounds Vera clearly won. I’m not looking for a Dream/Pride “tried to stop the fight” kind of decision, but it’s pretty bad that Couture’s “offense” in this fight amounted to likely fewer than twenty strikes, and holding Vera against the cage.

Also, shame on Vera for night trying to be more aggressive. I know there’s only so much you can do when you’re being smothered on the cage, but when he put Randy down he really needed to follow it up. He could’ve gotten a TKO if he had tried, I think.

bang on the money

i could have sworn Vera wanted to hug Randy too (maybe cos he idolizes him) at certain stages, dude jus wouldn’t stay away from the clinch even when it seemed he stand back and unload at distance… i take back what i said about giving up on him just yet, but omg the lad needs to realise its combat and uleash his firepower at will!

I thought the decision was worse than Shogun/Machida by far….in this case, it was obvious who did the most damage and actually had dominant positions where he could have actually finished the fight…..oh boy are they gonna get it tomorrow in the Unpopular Opinion so tune in..lol

You’re high if you think this was a worse decision than Shogun/Machida.

Bloody hell.

Okay, on par maybe? I wasn’t one of those that thought the Shogun/Machida fight was that bad though :(

looking at it again, I had Randy winning round 1 based on control, but looking at it again I say Vera took that round base on the early flurry. Randy didnt do much but cuddled him on the cage for the most part. You can say Couture won round 3 Couture landing some punches and landing some strikes in the clinch. He pretty much controlled the action in the first 3 min. Vera landed some meaningful shots and a take down towards the end, but it mostly in the last min, I’d say he needed to do some serious gnp when he had him mounted to pull off round 3
