King Mo Says He's Down To Fight Gegard Mousasi Right Now
Man, this interview King Mo does with Ariel Helwani is golden. You have to check it out, but here's an excerpt:
Do you think you are ready to fight Gegard Mousasi?
Yeah, man. Here's the thing I don't get: Mousasi is a good fighter, but all of a sudden they make it sound like he's the God of MMA. Fans, they don't understand ... People try to say that Mousasi is light years ahead of me and this and that and he's going to knock me out. Ok, please. I would love to see that happen. I think he's a great fighter, but by any means, I think I'm a great fighter too. What am I supposed to be afraid of him or something? People just jump on the bandwagon. People say, 'Mo's fought a bunch of over the hill nobodies.' Well, when I fought Travis Wiuff at the time, he wasn't a nobody. People were picking him to knock me out. People just thought that a wrestler vs. wrestler was a bad match-up for Mo. And then when I fought Fabio Silva, they were like, 'Oh, man, it's going to be a tough one. Fabio Silva's tough.' Well, I beat him up. Then I fought Yukiya Naito, and people were like, 'His submissions skills ... this and that.' I had no idea who he really was. I just knew he had a decent record. Then when I fought [Ryo] Kawamura, I beat him with one leg, you know what I am saying? ... You never know what's going to happen in MMA until the fight's over with. You can ask Wagnney Fabiano. Ask him. Against Mack "Da Menace" [Semerzier]. No one knew that Mack was going to go out there, besides Mack. Mack knew that he was going to win. There's no clear-cut favorite in MMA really. All to say that you are down to fight Mousasi right away, correct?
Yeah. What am I going to do? Turn it down because he's Mousasi?
He also says that he will not fight Babalu, Fabricio Werdum, Rashad Evans, or Daniel Cormier. However, everyone else is fair game. Now, of course Strikeforce would be pretty stupid to throw King Mo in there with Mousasi off the bat. However, we could see him in there with Mousasi quicker than most would think if King Mo is able to make a big splash with fans in his Strikeforce debut that could happen later this year.

Great Fighter?
I know fighters have to self promote, but that is sort of overdoing it.
I wish I had audio of the laugh I let out when I read the tweet for this piece. Just because he is “down” doesn’t mean he is ready. Not being afraid of someone is completely different than not being as good of a fighter as that same someone.
Also, someone needs to inform this guy that Wiuff wasn’t really a good somebody when he beat him last year.

Wiuff
Had over 60 fights winning over 80% of them, was coming off wins over Tuchscherer and a KO of Fujita and outweighed Mo by 30 lbs as Mo took the fight last minute.
Mo stopped him in the first round of his first fight. To downplay that win is beyond stupid.

A win over Travis Wiuff in his DEBUT wasn’t big? Kerr isn’t a world beater, but he’s no scrub either.

Heads up, Mo has a point.
- Brock Lesnar was not ready to fight for the title or face Mir, Herring, Couture, etc.
- Randy Couture’s 3rd fight was for the belt.
- Machida’s 3rd fight was Rich Franklin who was (13 – 0) at the time.
- Anderson Silva’s 6th fight was against Sakurai who was (17 wins -0 -2 draws)
There are more examples but if a fighter feels he’s ready then give him the opportunity, especially if he has a name. Let’s not forget that the (9 – 0) Brett Rogers “was not” ready for Arlovski. I personally think way too many fans and writers based their opinions on a fighter’s hype and non-hype, especially if they fight for the UFC or do not.

I can't believe
you are comparing Lawal to Lesnar, Couture, Machida, and Anderson Silva.
Pretty funny stuff.

Combined records of his FIVE opponents is 109-40. Compare that to most guys, who are fighting dudes who are 4-10 or 0-3. He’s not a worldbeater, but he’s getting there.. meanwhile you’re just hate hate hatin’ away on him!

Is he beating guys that are in their prime?
He hasn’t really done anything. He says he is a great fighter. You have to laugh at that. He also goes on in the interview to say he is the top dog at 205 in Strikeforce.
How can you even take someone that speaks such nonsense serious? I mean hyping yourself is one thing, but over hyping yourself and actually believing it is absurd as well as laughable.

He might not win
Probably won’t. But it won’t be some smashing like people seem to think it is and that’s more of a testament to how good Mousasi is than him not being ready.

Sorry, I had to finish laughing...
So you think a Mousasi win would show how good he is since he beat Lawal? Are you serious?

we have some real beefs here. who is older mark kerr or jeremy horn?
if you beat j.h you have a guy with 88 wins. that is the new math here. i would just need to schedule dan severn and jeremy horn just to have my opponents record at over 170 wins. i would have to fight between hw and lhw but it’s been done before. if rampage’s a-team movie bombs you think he will go ballistic or 5150 again. rampage at – 800 for this. that means you have to bet 800 to make 100 dollars in vegas money. scramble and ramble on.

Reading Comprehension . . .
Felix
I’m not comparing the Lawal to any of the aforementioned fighters.
I am comparing the situation. Gabriel Gonzaga didn’t believe all of the Cro-Cop hype, he viewed him simply as another fighter.
Many fighters are quick to say that they’re not ready to fight at the elite level. Brandon Vera particularly was really honest about turning down a fight against Lyoto Machida, he simply said he was not ready. On another hand Brock Lesnar came into the UFC and said that he was ready to face anybody, particularly the top dogs of the heavyweight division.
I’ll repeat, there are more examples.

that is the best comment on this thread.
it worked out well for gonzaga too. probably the second best leg kick to the head i have ever seen. that started cro cop’s downfall too.

This is cool.
You know what? I’m sick and tired … I’ve been trying to be diplomatic and be cool, but I guess if I have to be an a**hole, I’m going to be an a**hole, dog
Like Lesnar, Mayweather Jr. and Junie Browning, Muhammad Lawal wants to create a compelling brand, while pissing off some keyboard warriors who will scream that he’s an arrogant a**hole-douche bad- ad nauseum.

by SlickRick00 on Oct 14, 2009 8:50 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
i read the whole interview, but still dont get it. i think king mo has alot of raw potential, but does lack the experience to take on a mousassi just yet. he could be the next big thing or he could be the next soku or houston. the fighters he has beaten so far do not lead me to think he will be in the top 5 p4p soon, but that’s not his fault, he’s beaten the guys they have put in front of him, easily, so he could be a top lhw and a top p4p in the future. a fight with even someone like whitehead would show alot. then move up to a babalu, or arona and then we’ll talk gegard. i think he made a wise choice by going with SF. he can build those dollars up before he goes to the ufc. mousassi would already in the ufc if it wasn’t for that pesky contract and finkie’s influence. :-)

!["It's going to take a lot of time," he said. "I have to take it step by step. I cannot put so many pounds on in a short time. First, I will be a small heavyweight, and slowly I want to put more pounds on. It will take two, three years before I'm a solid heavyweight."
"They wanted me to sign for six fights," Mousasi said of the original deal. "I didn't want that. They didn't pay me that much. But money will come. I want to grow with Strikeforce as they grow with Showtime and CBS. I think it's a good place to be.
"If I had it in my mind, like OK, I'm going to the UFC, then I would have gone. But I have a new contract with DREAM, so I'm planning to stay busy and fight in Strikeforce and Japan constantly."
"I don't want to fight for too long," he said. "(At) 30, I'm finished. In my mind, (I just want) the amount of money that [would give me] a good life. Anymore than that, I don't need.
