The UFC's Match Making

Over the past few days a few bouts have been rumored to be taking place at future UFC events. If those rumors come to fruition, we will get to see some competitive plus very important match ups in the near future. 5ouncesofpain has mentioned the following fights as either rumored or verbally agreed to:

Wilson Gouveia vs. Nathan Marquardt-After Gouveia ran through the very durable Jason MacDonald he mentioned getting a shot at current MW champ Anderson Silva. If he gets past Marquardt he would be on the fast track to a title shot in my opinion. Although Marquardt has a loss to Silva already, he remains the biggest threat to Silva in the MW division. Both fighters are well rounded with Marquardt having the better gas tank. The winner of this fight is right there in the mix of things.

Gabriel Gonzaga vs. Shane Carwin-Ohhh...I'm slobbering thinking about this one. I've been waiting for the UFC to push Carwin against some decent competition, and boy did they do it with this one. This match up really impacts the HW division, and should be really competitive. It's interesting that the UFC choose Carwin to face Gonzaga instead of Cain Velasquez. Many people thought he was the next big thing in terms of who the UFC wanted to push. Instead he's fighting a newcomer at the next Ultimate Fight Night. Is Dana White trying to prove a point here to the AKA camp?

Chuck Liddell vs. Keith Jardine 2-BOOO, I wanted to see Liddell vs. Anderson Silva, but I guess this will suffice. The first match up was pretty close, and Liddell did beat the guy(Wanderlei) that just steam rolled Jardine. This is another match that will give the UFC direction. If Liddell wins, then he's safe for at least another fight and gives the UFC at least one more time to use his name. If Jardine wins, then that moves him back up the ladder and a little bit away from gatekeeper status at the moment.

What are your thoughts on the match ups if they come to fruition?

add Diego Sanchez – Joe Stevenson to that list; which is bad news for Joe Daddy i think.

The Gonzaga – Carwin fight should be epic! We’ll finally see Carwin fight someone worthwhile.

i think carwin will be on the wrong end of a round 1 destruction – either way that fight ain’t going to a decision

3PA, I don’t know man…Gonzaga can be broken, and a big strong wrestler like Carwin could do it.

Liddell – Jardine makes no sense for either fighter.

Even if Liddell beats Jardine, it won’t prove a thing. If Jardine beats Liddell again, it will only prove that Chuckys done. The win won’t help Jardine one bit.

Yea, I didn’t say it would prove anything. Just that if Liddell wins it gives the UFC one more fight to use him name. If Jardine wins he’s elevated from gatekeeper status by winning two in a row. Personally I’d like to see Liddell vs. Cane…or Jardine vs. Cane.

while a win for liddel would redeem him from his loss and set-up a future PPV main event, i don’t really think a win for jardine would help him much. it’s doing what he has already done and something he has the right gameplan for (and i think in that scenario the focus would still be on liddell; he doesn’t have “it” anymore, last nail in the coffin, retirement etc.)

I think this match up says that the UFC will never push Jardine as a contender for the title.

Kelvin is Cane one of your favorite fighters? By the way, whats your top three faves?

Umm…I wouldn’t call him one of my favs…but he is someone to be on the lookout for in the future IMO.
