Would You Want To See Randy Couture vs. Anderson Silva?

In the midst of Anderson Silva announcing that he will retire sometime next year I got to thinking. What would be a fight for him that would do well PPV wise, and present a challenge to him. I mean Silva's reasoning for retiring is basically that he doesn't have anything left to prove. However, a fight with Couture would be a interesting proposition in my opinion.

I know some of you are probably reading this like WTF? Hear me out...Couture is seeking a fight with Fedor Emelianenko who is arguably the best P4P fighter in the world. However, that fight will probably never happen, so why not fight the guy who could argue that he deserves the P4P title more than Fedor? Couture has a 3 fight deal...he's fighting Brock Lesnar, and could potentially fight Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira. I think he's coming out of one of those fights with a loss. If he can't get the Fedor fight at that time...Anderson Silva would be the perfect substitution.

I know you are saying to yourself..."Couture fights at HW"...this I know. However, as you know he is the former UFC LHW champion and is a relatively small HW. Normally I would say that Silva would destroy Couture because of the difference in striking ability. However, I think Couture could possibly pose some interesting problems for Silva with his wrestling/clinch game. Silva could possibly make it interesting on the ground with his underrated BJJ game. This fight accomplishes three things:

  • Would be a HUGE PPV draw

  • Couture could fight someone that's a legitimate best P4P guy

  • Couture would pose an interesting challenge to Silva

Yes, great fight! Would be an awesome draw for the UFC and present both fighters with a great match-up!

It would definitley be a big draw. I think Silva might beat him easily though. He is just way too quick for Randy to handle. I think the reason Randy went to fighting heavyweight when he came back was because he knew he wasn’t fast enough to keep competing with the guys in the LHW division, but he’s still quicker than most of the big guys in the HW division.

You are probably right…although Randy could probably get him down and lay on him for a little bit…lol

Yeah, but to Randy’s credit he has been the most consistantly successful underdog in MMA.

ed soares, anderson silva’s manager has come out with a statement that silva will not be retireing next year, has 6 fights left on his contract and is on very good terms with dana and the ufc per f.o. magazine.com. as far as him fighting randy, who wouldnt want to see that fight!

Yea, I read that…but like you said…a lot of people would want to see that one…I hadn’t read where anyone had that of the suggestion…so I just went with it. I think it would fit well in the grand scheme of things with Couture nearing the end of his road fighting wise.

Nah, I’m not really interested in seeing that fight to be truthful. I would much rather see Couture fight Heavyweights, and as you stated Kelvin, Couture could probably do nothing more than lay on Silva for 5 rounds…..true, it would be a blockbuster PPV, but I’m just not high on this particular fight for some reason.
